Normal pain or something serious?

hi mommas!!
So all the sites and books tell me growing pain cramps etc are all normal but I've spent hours trying to fall asleep lately with very strong pains. In my hips and back.
Feels like someone is standing on my hips and pushing them whilest I get punched in the lower back.
It's been so painful I've been in tears and my obgyn tells me this is normal growing pain for 20 weeks.
Is it really normal? And what did you do to help with the pains?
I also can't stand for longer then ten mins before the pain in my back and hips and thighs hits me bad
Anyone else feeling this too?

Re: Normal pain or something serious?

  • I have been having some back pain- but mostly achy and it's right in the center. I also have hip pain and a ton of round ligament pain lately.

What you are describing seems pretty intense? You're obgyn said this is normal? I would normally say listen to what they tell you, but if you are really concerned, maybe go into an ER to double check?

If everything comes back normal, I try to lay down with my body pillow and try to relax a bit. It's tough getting comfortable but I do my best. I wish I had more advice.. it's a long road ahead! A lot of trial and error to get comfortable I find.

  • Do you think it could be muscle spasms? I've had back/shoulder pain for more than half of my life (gross to think about, but true.) and it's usually muscle spasms and tightness from that.

Have you thought about seeing a massage therapist? Some of the women here swear by chiropractors...

I would also suggest investing in a big exercise ball. If you sit on the ball and spread your legs to shoulder width and rock forward and back it helps stretch out the hips. It's the only thing that's helped me with the hip pain.

I'm just throwing stuff out there because your ob said it was normal and everyone's threshold for pain is different.
  • I started having this really sharp pain in my left side today so I called my Dr and left a message. I am waiting to hear back from her. I searched the board and keep seeing it is RLP but I want to run it by the Dr myself, just in case. I am 21 weeks 5 days and I am pretty sure it is normal but we'll see.

  • If reccommend a chiropractor I go every 2-3 weeks now and he said he'll see me weekly after 30 weeks. It makes a world of a difference for me. I've had really bad back/hip pain as well and after I see him it's heavenly. Chiros will also help make sure your pelvis is in line and ready for delivery. It helps the baby be better positioned and hopefully with help me not have any back labor
  • Do you happen to have a retrograde uterus? It means that your uterus is tilted toward the back of your body, rather than the front. It also means that when baby grows, he or she grows right into your spine rather than outward, stretching out your belly. I have this, and while it's nice in some respects (at end of term with DD I only looked about 6 months pregnant) it will wreak HAVOC on your hips and back. It can also happen if you're on the smaller side, as far as height is concerned, because as a percentage more of your body is being displaced by baby than would happen in someone who has an extra 6 inches in their torso. There were some nights that I had to army crawl to the toilet because I quite literally could not stand. I had to be very careful to get enough exercise and movement in per day to keep myself loose without straining enough to make it hurt worse. Laying down definitely hurt the worst, regardless of how I slept. Sitting was second worst, so I actually spent most days in my last few months up and walking/standing everywhere. Make sure you keep good posture whether you're sitting or standing, and whatever you do, do NOT over-stretch. I made that mistake early on, and my doctor said you essentially piss off and strain muscles that are already pissed off and strained. Rather, move your body in such a way that you're giving your muscles some slack (line upward dog in yoga) and slowly return to normal. Sometimes this helps "reset" yor spinal alignment that can be pulled out of whack by angry muscles.

I know this is super long, but I can already feel it starting in my hips and back, too, and I thought I'd share my experience. But no, you are not alone, and it can (unfortunately) be a completely normal occurrence in pregnancy.
  • I havent had this myself, but have heard that body pillows really help (sleeping with a pillow between your legs especially). If your having this much trouble now it will definately be a worthwile investment to get you through. I would also reccomend seeing a physio. I see mine every month, if i stop going before too long my back starts killing me (herniated disk). Also, with your intensity of pain it might not hurt to get a second opinion from another dr?
  • I've had a lot of pain in the center of my lower back, but I think it's because of the added weight in my stomach. My hips have been fine. If your OB isn't concerned don't let yourself stress, but looking for a massage therapist or chiropractor sounds like a good idea.
  • Nope my obgyn says everything's fine. My uterus is in a good position not forward or back.
The only thing she said could be causing me problem is the baby is laying transverse and legs are pushing at my hips.
But everything is healthy and growing well.
I find being on my hands and knees the most comfy position at the Moment.
    Just very awkward.
Got an appointment booked tomorrow to have a good look and make sure nothing is wrong with my spine that is beyond normal
  • I haven't head those pains but I do get a lot of pressure under my ribs since I have a short torso. Towards the end with my daughter I had a muscle pull right under my rids. I have come to think some people depending on our build get some strange pains but everything for the little one is ok.
  • @LilyCovello23 baby laying sideways will be SUPER rough on your hips!!! And unfortunately anything that affects your hips typically ends up affecting your back. Sorry you're dealing with this! :( Hopefully baby will switch to head-down for you soon!
  • Throughout both of my pregnancies I get occasional lower back pain. Usually stretching, a warm bath, or a massage fixes it.
When I was about 24 weeks with my son I woke up in the middle of the night with horrible lower back pain. I couldn't even squat down to sit on the toilet and pee. I called my dr and went to the ER. The hospital didn't find anything wrong but gave me a muscle relaxer. I went to my Ob the next day and he took a urine sample and had it tested, and sure enough I had a UTI that was causing the pain.

I hate to say it, but if your doctor says it's not serious and you're in so much pain, maybe you should go to the ER or another doctor for a second opinion.

Hope you get some relief, and soon!

  • I wouldn't go to the ER, but urgent care instead. It will save money and not take up time for people in life threatening situations. I agree with PP, try massage, warm bath, exercise ball. Maybe even google how to move the baby so they go in a more comfortable position.

  • I wound up going to urgent care for the same issues. Wound up my pelvis was really inflamed and so were the lymph nodes. Doctor gave me a belt to wear that helps a little, but other then that just warm baths and dealing with it. I'd get checked if you're really worried :/ but there's not a lot that can be done.
