Does anyone know the general percentage of women that hyper ovulate (absent fertility treatments)? Couldn't find info online. Just curious.

Like two for the price of one? I told DH that I would absolutely be ok w/ twins! I think I draw the line past that though...

Yes, releasing two eggs in one cycle. I'm familiar with the factors that increase your odds, but wasn't sure of the general population of women this affects or even if that statistic is known. Perhaps if they just estimate that.

I've started thinking Lately that I would be happy with twins too. Idk if I would go for a second but I would be happy to have two children overall. Twins do run on my moms side and I am older, two factors that increase my likelihood. But I would think it would increase my freak out factor!

I don't have much to add but I want to see if anyone knows the stats. We have a high probability of having twins (I have twin brothers, H is a twin and H's mom is a twin). Sooooo. I would like to know science if anyone has them!

I am the fraternal twin of a fraternal twin. My bio mother was the sister in her male/female set. I am the sister in my male/female fraternal set. I have a higher likelihood to release more than one egg per cycle & spontaneously conceive twins. So far I've had singletons. My risk increases with age.

Yes. All of this. I am curious if people know the overall stats on women hyperovulating? I wonder if it's known? B/c you only really know if you get an ultrasound or have twins. I was hoping 'they' may be able to extrapolate some sort of number to the general population based on known incidences.

When I visited my OB we were discussing my anovulatory cycles. He told me there's a 5% chance of having multiples when on Clomid.

I am a fraternal twin, so I have a higher likelihood of hyper ovulation. I have not yet had a pregnancy, but I'm prepared that it could happen to me as well (well as prepared as one could be lol).

My mom had three pregnancies and she lost two of them. All three were with fraternal twins, so she hyper ovulated often. She was very young as well, all three pregnancies by 23.

@pooputtete I have heard that being on Clomid, or other fertility treatments can increase your likelihood for hyperovulation (or other fertility treatments, just multiples in general). I was more curious about the general population without drugs.

@katie1782 I can see that if someone hyperovulated, they would do so frequently, but that would be something else I'd be interested in knowing - if you do hyperovulate, how often does it happen for the 'average' woman?

I think I know there is no answer to all of this, but the fact finder in me just wants to know...

@benicode That is a really interesting question. I don't know if there has ever been studies or anything done on this, but if they are out there I would love to find out more as well. FWIW the doctor told my mom that she would likely have twins every pregnancy, so I'm not sure how he could make that assumption.

This is a really interesting question. Fraternal twins run in both mine and DH's family. My great grandmother had 3 sets of fraternal twins (and four singletons).

I have recurring cysts (not sure if it's PCOS or not yet), and there are some months where my ovaries on both sides hurt. I don't know if that means I could potentially hyperovulate, or just that my ovaries really, really hate me.

Hey, perfect timing. I just came across this stat in a footnote of TCOYF:

"Studies have shown that multiple ovulation may occur as frequently as 10% of all cycles, a much higher percentage than previously thought. While it is true that only about 1% of deliveries are fraternal twins, it must be remembered that most ovulations don’t result in conception."

FYI, your husband/his side of the family has nothing to do with whether you'll have twins or not. You having twin brothers might though!

I lost twins but have no known family history of twins. I am of the age where twins occur more frequently .
