Funneling

I had my anatomy scan yesterday, and while Baby girl looks great and is measuring on track, they began to notice some funneling near the cervix. My cervix is still at a a great length, but they are sending me to a high risk to check it out/keep an eye on it. Has anyone had any experience with this? I've been high risk before due to gestational diabetes, but this is new ground for me.

Re: Funneling

  • I have not had the experience of having any funneling, but I get cervix checks for shortening, funneling, or dilating every 4 weeks. They will likely just set you up on a regular schedule of transvaginal ultrasounds (some ladies go weekly, some every 2 weeks, some monthly, etc.) and take measurements to length, and see if your funneling gets any worse. If it does, or if they decide it's already bad enough, they'll probably want to do a cerclage if it suits your situation. Good luck, glad your doc is right on it!!

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I'm 21 weeks pregnant and was sent to high risk 2 weeks ago after I had very light spotting, during the check up they found out my cervix was measuring 3.5cm (it should be between 4 - 4.5cm).

I'm not on bedrest but the doctor said I had to avoid standing up for long periods of time, walking long distances, lifting any weight ect... He also said I should pee as soon as I feel I have to go (not to hold it) He will be checking up on me every 4 weeks, but if my cervix measurement keeps on reducing he will be checking me up with more frequency.

I have a pretty active lifestyle and this has been really hard on me, I live and work on a farm 2 hours away from the hospital and he said that if in the next few weeks the risk is higher he will have me transfered to the city.

Right now all I'm doing is trying to win time and doing everything I can to avoid going into pre-term labor.

have you felt any contractions? I have no idea how they feel and wonder if I'm mistaking them with the baby moving or round ligament pain.

Hope everything works out just fine for you!
  • Had my a/s today and got a similar diagnosis from my midwife, she said I have a dynamic cervix and there is some funneling but that my baby is growing fine and is healthy! Also, she said my cervix was still a good length so that puts me at ease, but I am a FTM and this is making me wonder if I did anything to cause this?! I have had No pain, no bleeding, no real negative symptoms so it's hard not to feel like I did too much and caused this by not being careful.

Hey! I'm going through the the same thing right now- funneling cervix but still measuring a good length. I went in on Friday - my doctor asked me to come back for this Friday but on today asked me to come in on tomorrow! My baby girl is healthy and beautiful - I'm on bed rest and can only work five hours a day.
  • I wanted to give up an update- I'm meeting with a high risk doctor on Friday to see if my doctor should do a cerclaige and a more accurate cervix length. He is starting me on Crinone to strengthen my cervix!
  • I feel like I should get a second opinion from a high risk doctor because my midwife isn't seeing me again for another 10 days :/ I want to trust her but I also want to have a healthy baby in January and I'm scared that we aren't being as proactive as possible! @neababy Did your doctor refer you to the high risk doctor? I may call my doctor on Monday and see what kind of options we have.
  • @lolobellrn yes my doctor set my appointment up with the high risk doctor to get a second opinion. The high risk doctor measured my cervix and said everything seems normal . I do have funneling but as of now I'm meeting with both every week. I've been prescribed Crinone and i started using it on yesterday. Heard some really good things about this medicine but if I were you I would get a second opinion or really stress your midwife that you don't feel comfortable and would like to meet with a doctor.
  • I'm going back in today after having some mild cramping all day yesterday and this morning a tiny blood clot when I wiped after going pee. I'm nervous, but happy my MW is getting me in to be checked, will also ask about high risk doctor too. I hope this is nothing serious but better safe then sorry! Let me know how yours goes and praying for healthy LO's for us both
  • Sending prayers!
  • I'm praying for you too! I went to th high risk doctor today and he said I am measuring pretty good and that The funneling now is smaller than what it was. However, I remember seeing the funneling on sept. 4 and the funneling was clearly visible and it worried my Doctor enough to schedule a visit with the high risk doctor for a second opinion.I prayed for a stronger cervix and started speaking healing over my body. Reciting healing scriptures to build my faith. I will do the same for you. I have faith you and your little one will be fine . I hate to sound radical but I have no other explanation as to how my cervix seem fully closed and the funneling decreased major. I started Crinone last Friday night and that Friday morning was my first visit with the high risk doctor. And on that visit he said I was measuring normal but just wanted to make sure at the visit I had today. He recommended I go ahead and start the Crinone my ob prescribed that night. I have another doctor visit with both in two weeks. The high risk doctor said I don't have to take the Crinone anymore in his opinion. And my ob said if at my next visit I look good- he is taking me off restrictions and taking me off of the medicine.
  • I doubt if the medicine made that miracle happen in a week lol
  • @neababy that's great news! Everything checked out normal yesterday at the doctor and my MW had already consulted with the high risk doctor and felt I just needed close monitoring, so I repeat my ultrasound on Monday and I've been praying and thinking good thoughts every day as well! I keep telling my baby girl she has to stay in longer! Talking to her and actually saying words and prayers out loud has really eased my mind and soul. Glad to have someone going thru a similar experience and see a positive outcome! Thank you for all the prayers
  • I had funneling and a dynamic cervix last pregnancy. Went into labor at 27 weeks and had my daughter at 30. Be lazy! Take it easy and lay around as much as you can! Kennedy is absolutely fine after a 2 month nicu stay. I just wish I understood what funneling was leading to. Good luck everyone! Xo
  • @Cristie2225 did your doctor place you on any modified bed rest or increased monitoring prior to going into labor?? I'm glad your little girl is perfect! Hoping the same for mine! It's so hard to be lazy when I feel fine, no symptoms at all!
