Plugged ducts

has anyone else had a problem with just one breast constantly getting a plugged milk duct? It's just my right one (it produces more than left). But lately it keeps getting plugged. I'll get it sorted out and a few days later plugged again. I don't nurse anymore, but pump exclusively.

Try a lecithin supplement. It helped me tremendously. I was recommended by two lactation consultants.

  • Yes, I sadly get plugged ducts every week at least. Usually it's because the breast is not being drained completely. For me, that's when my LO sleeps for longer at night or has a bad latch. How often and how long are you pumping?

I usually don't pump after 11pm to give myself a break, and start back up at 7am. I pump every 2-3 hours for 15 min each session.
  • I get them if I don't nurse or pump for an extended time like 5 or 6 hours. My LO sleeps through the night but I still get up once during the night to pump. It's kind of a pain that I still have to get up but it's only 15 minutes and it helps prevent clogged ducts and it's also really built up my freezer stash. A middle of the night pump might help you too
  • Also try repositioning the piece on your breast to a different angle.
  • You can try warm compresses (hot water in diapers work great) prior to pumping, massaging while pumping, hand expression after pumping, and lecithin supplement. Also, a hospital grade pump is more efficient and will empty your breasts. I was an exclusive pumper - got mastitis 2nd week postpartum when I started pumping - followed the tips listed above and didn't get it again. Good luck!

  • I've gotten mastitis 3 times now. I'm definitely doing something wrong. Talking to my obgyn Monday and hopefully getting a lactation consultant too. In the meantime I started leitchin supplements.
  • I had to be on meds to help mine. I got mastitis... It was awful! I hope you feel better!
  • Chest compressions when pumping help enormously. I exclusively pump my son because he had tongue tie and still has trouble latching. Also there are gel bead pads by lanisoh you can buy that heat in microwave that help with let down and to knead out clots while pumping.
  • Also make sure your bras and cloning aren't too right. When I had them I even slept without a bra or shirt for a couple of nights and just laid in a towel on a heating pad. Motrin can also help with the inflammation.
