Anemia and pregnancy??

I've heard it's pretty common during pregnancy but I've been doing a lot of reading and I've read anemia can cause low birth weight, pretty term labor, developmental problems, and postpartum depression. I took prenatals starting at week 5 and finished all 200 pills around July. But my doctor says my iron levels are decreasing instead of increasing and shes really worried. I don't see her til the 25th and I'm due the 2nd, I was told to taken high mgs of iron and eats lots of food that is rich in iron. And I make sure to eat eggs beans or cereal (with milk) everyday. I have 3 weeks left which is not a lot of time and I was not worried about labor one bit up until now...
Have any of you other mommies had anemia during pregnancy, if so how did it affect your labor, baby, or postpartum?

  • I am a ftm and did have anemia and was put on iron pills on top of prenatal which from what I understand you're supposed to take until last day of pregnancy, well now iron levels are normal so iron pills have been suspended but I'm still taking prenatal, call your Dr and demand to get an appointment ASAP no excuses from doctor!!!!!!
  • It's normal for iron levels to get lower the farther you are in your pregnancy. Keep taking the supplements till the end of pregnancy if that's what your doc also recommends.
  • My doctor is apparently in surgery currently, I'm guessing with a patient? But that's a long time to wait to see her, especially 7 days before my due date. But im going to take iron and probably buy some more prenatals since I finished mine? I'm just kinda worried it's too late and ill need a blood transfusion during labor...
  • If she was worried about your iron levels being too low, did she suggest you might need iron through your IV?  I would definitely call the office back to clarify and express your concerns.  Ask if you need to have your level checked before then.  If you and the doctor are both concerned, maybe ask if you can have your levels checked next week instead of two weeks from now.  Find out exactly how much iron you should be taking until your next appointment.
  • You should continue taking prenatal vitamins throughout your entire pregnancy and should continue after you deliver if you plan on breastfeeding.
  • Can you call your doctor and get a refill for prenatal vitamins and see if doctor can also prescribe iron pills over to your pharmacy and move up your appointment??
  • My doctor recommended a liquid iron supplement that I got on Amazon. I think it's called Flora something. It tastes terrible. I'm supposed to take it twice a day. I haven't been very good about it but I was told I'd need IV iron if I don't increase my numbers.
  • I take one recommended by doctor called Fero Sequels. Buy it at CVS. It's good stuff.
  • I was anemic when DS was born. They made me take iron and Vit C after he was born. It was fine.
  • I was anemic with DD. I had to take an extra iron supplement (slow release to limit constipation). In the hospital my numbers got really low and I know they gave me some extra medication and IVs, but I don't remember what. I also had to continue to take supplements while BF. My DR has said to take prenatals daily throughout the entire pregnancy, so you may want to discuss if that is something you should be doing as well. I have been borderline anemic my entire life, so I assumed I would be during pregnancy. Good luck!
  • I had very bad anemia that put me in the hospital because j was so sick. I developed colitis and had a ton of bleeding for weeks and weeks and my body couldn't keep up. I had to do iron infusions and felt almost instantly better! I still have low numbers but my dr isn't worried as long as I'm feeling better.
  • Wait, you haven't taken vitamins since July, or you haven't taken an iron supplement since July??

I'm anemic and on iron pills and my numbers have recently dropped. Dr said the baby is taking everything and I just get the leftovers. He's not concerned about my numbers dropping and said he will check after I deliver to see what I need to get my numbers back up for me.
