Green Poop

My baby is EBF and has been pooping like normal up until yesterday. Now her poops are green. I read up on it yesterday and some sites suggest it may be an over supply issue, but I don't feel as if I have an over supply at all, if anything I feel as if I'm tapped out by the end of the night. I've also read it could be to a dairy intolerance or me eating too much sugar. Anyway, the baby seems totally fine, just pooping green.

I'm calling the pedi in the morning, but has anyone else experienced this??

Re: Green Poop

  • Is it strictly green? Some days DS poop is more on the green side mixed with yellow.

  • Last night she had one yellow poop, but the rest have been green
  • Definitely reach out to your pedi but this sounds like a fore milk/hind milk imbalance.

Exactly. I had this issue. Could be oversupply or not eating / pumping long enough
  • I EBF and my LO has green poop 1-2 times a week. My pediatrician is not concerned at all and says that green poop is just a variation of normal in babies. With my LO I am pretty sure it is from times he just snacks or falls asleep before emptying, and ends up getting mainly fore milk. But milk is still milk, it is all good for baby
  • DD also got green poop and it signaled that I needed to cut dairy foods from my diet because she couldn't handle it in her system. I avoided most dairy till 6 months. She now eats dairy on her own fine. I would keep watching the diapers and check with your pedi.

  • @ChanelLovesB how did you fix this? I think I might have this problem. My little one ate almost every hour yesterday like she just wasn't satisfied. And also with the couple green diapers. And I can literally hear the milk running in her mouth.
  • Block feeding is what LLL recommends. Basically only feed out of one boob for 2 to 3 hours before switching
  • I talked to our Pedi about this as well because LO has this issue. She said that green poop isn't a huge issue, it's just her intestinal flora developing.

That being said, we had some weight loss during week 2, and the pediatrician recommended I feed from only one breast each feeding, and keep the baby alert and feeding for up to 30 minutes (this of course happens every 2-3 hours), then stop the feeding but give her pumped milk or formula supplement if she's still hungry. The advice has worked out, LO has gained and still has occasional green poops, but also has the typical mustard or yellow seeds.

I've seen all sorts of explanations including the hind/foremilk issue (which was our issue, too much foremilk, not enough hind), also dairy intolerance, and overabundance of iron. In any case, talk to your pediatrician ;-)

  • Block feeding. The two PP hit the nail on the head @candicejeff2013
  • Lol I thinks it's interesting that we all got such different answers for green poop. My LC said it was because she wasn't digesting her food well enough and when I started paced feedings the poop turned yellow again.

  • Yeah I called the pediatrician today and she said it may be a stomach virus. When I told her she was peeing and pooping in regular intervals and wasn't acting sick she just said not to worry about it.

I'm going to just keep block feeding for another few days to see if that fixes it.
