Solids!

I thought I would share a positive experience we've had with introducing solids!

Last week at our 4 month check up we asked if we could start and he said go for it, just told us to start with fruits and veggies!

I also heard to start with veggies so they don't get the sweet first or it's harder to get them to do veggies.. Not sure if it's true or not but we went with it! We started with carrots and she LOVED them! He also told us to make eating fun and let her get messy and I think it worked! She doesn't spit it out and gets excited when the spoon comes at her!

We have only done carrots so far.. Also just a warning.. Carrots stain!

Re: Solids!

  • That sounds like so much fun! I think we're going to wait until 5 mo to introduce foods. We thought we would let our DS play with it first to spark his curiosity. I try to have him smell everything I eat and I make a point to say "Mmm yummy" after every bite if he's watching. He smiles big at me. I hope we have success like you! And good to know about the fruits, makes sense.

  • Did you buy baby food or make it? I'm so interested in making my food... But not sure logistics. Haha.
  • I started off feeding him rice cereal, will it be ok to do solids now. My DS is 4 months now :D
  • She probably doesn't get much in her stomach but now anything I am eating she watches me like a hawk and giggles, it's the cutest thing!

@saloved I didn't make my own food, I honestly just don't have the time! Maybe when she is eating it regularly I will start, she barely eats any at a time :)

@dariusmom I would just double check with your pedi, mine was all for letting her start! I'm sure if yours is doing fine with the cereal than I would say go for it!

Here is a picture of her :)
  • Cute! I'm prob going to wait until my LO is 5-6 months since he can't really sit up unsupported to play with/eat his food yet anyway. He does seem to be showing some more interest though and smiles when I let him smell what I'm eating. :)
  • I make my own baby food! It's super easy. You can also make things you can't buy in the pouches or jars. For example, I bought $2 worth of parsnips (like carrots) and it made 18 servings! The pouches are like $1.50 and only make 3 servings, so it's totally worth the time! And you know what your LO is eating! We just steam most things, but we did buy some frozen veggies at Whole Foods this past weekend and you just microwave those as usual (but on the longer side of the suggested time), then blend it all up, adding liquid if needed to thin it out! We bought a nutribullet just for this purpose.
  • My baby turned 4 months on the 22nd, but I started solids 1 week before. I started with bananas and she loves them. I just try a new one each week to get her used to different foods. So far she has had bananas, peaches, apples, and sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are her favorite and peaches are her least favorite. She also has rice cereal in her bottle at bedtime. We didn't ask her doctor before starting solids, but we aren't too fond of her doctor either. When Emily was 3 months her doctor said she needs only 2 oz every 3 hours. She said since I was feeding her 4 to 6 oz that I was overfeeding. My baby was only 12lbs at 3 months and is pretty long, so not the case. We got the advice from another doctor that said if baby is hungry then feed her till she has had enough. Common sense!
Is say start when your baby shows lots of interest in what you're eating. It worked for us and since starting solids she's much more satisfied!

Nice! I'm on the fence about making food. For me: Pros - cheaper & I know where the food is coming from. Con - I have no idea what I am doing! What kind of liquid do you add to thin it out?
  • We started with rice cereal too and just started with baby food this week. So far so good!! He loves ANYTHING that makes him more of a big boy. He knows when he sees the bowl and spoon. His fussing goes to HUGE smile and giggles.

About how much time per week do you spend making food?
  • I'm going to do baby led weaning, after 6 months when she can digest what she eats.  Then I don't need to worry about making baby food - they eat what you eat, at their own pace and no power struggles over feeding, and no overfeeding either.  I eat paleo too, so lo's not going to get cereals, just veggies and fruit and meats.

I don't get this new trend. Aren't you afraid the baby is going to choke on the pork chop pieces you feed them? (They the pork chop for a six month old on babyledweaning.com) and what about the fact that they can't chew
  • They can chew, or 'gum' their food.  Basically, they get a strip of something and gnaw it and swallow little bits that come off - they aren't going to be getting big pieces at that age.  And, apparently because the gag reflex is so high at this age still, they don't shovel stuff back in too far and choke, something puree fed babies have trouble with apparently because they've lost more of this reflex when they finally do get real 'solids'.

Also, breast milk and formula is still superior for nutrients, so that should still make up most of their diet until they are older, so it's not necessary that they get purees.  And apparently babies are less picky and there's no food/table wars over eating different foods.  It all made lots of sense when I read more on it.  I know in advance I'll be one of these cruel moms that makes one meal, so picky won't fly well.  :)
  • I don't know about feeding my LO meat until after the first year. Although I haven't asked my ped about it. Has anyone read up on that? Meat is difficult for adults to digest as it is, I can only imagine it reaking havoc on his little system. I think it will only be veggies first (peas have a ton of protein!) and then eventually fruits for us, and of course the super nutritious booby milk as long as possible. Pretty sure we won't dive right into cereals either.
  • At our 4 month appt my ped told me to wait until 6 months to start solids. He said the 4-6 month guideline is old and they now know feeding solids too early can lead to food allergies later in life. He also said that when we start at 6 month to feed baby whatever we're eating, including meats, seafood, eggs, peanut butter, whatever. If we eat it, he can eat it.
  • Yay for your positive experience, OP!

We're waiting until 6 months like we did for DD. I can't believe that's less than two months away already! Crazy how fast the time is flying.

I made most of the purees for DD and plan to do the same for DS. I already made some roasted pear and banana purée and froze it in cubes because we have a pear tree. It's honestly so easy.

I'm not a fan of baby led weaning. You don't end up feeding baby what you eat, you end up eating what you feed baby. With purees you eat whatever you want and pull a cube of food out for LO to eat. There's no evidence of BLW being any better for the kid. It might help their pincer grasp but so would letting them grab anything. It doesn't make sense for my family but whatever works.

We actually follow Ellyn Satter for family eating, it eliminates food battles. For those who are interested: www.ellynsatterinstitute.org.

  • We have continued to do solids and she now closes her mouth , almost hard, over the spoon and gets so excited! She also watches us eat, watching the food move up to our mouths!

LO is very steady with holding her head and loves sitting up!

We also didn't feel is was necessary to do cereal and our pedi also said they just released new guidelines for allergen foods like strawberries and peanut butter, they now are saying introduce those items to them early!

I hope everyone else has a positive experience when they start, it's so much fun!!
  • I just got my baby bullet in the mail! I'm excited to use it to make homemade baby food, but that said I am putting it off till *at least* six months.. Right now my breast milk is all baby needs.

  • I think I am holding off on solids until at least 6 months! The moment they were 4 months people started asking me about baby food but I'd rather wait and they don't seem to need it yet. I looked into baby led weaning and after research and talking with my pediatrician I've decided to not go that route! J
  • I've been preparing for when we get the go ahead to start solids. We prefer to eat locally if at all possible so all summer I've been buying a little extra fruits and veggies when we go to a farm stand. We got a blendtec blender which blends really nicely so no need to add liquid or cook the veggies for very long. Most fruits I don't cook at all just blend. It doesn't take long either. 6 peaches got me 20 servings!
  • My LO has been having solids since July. Fruits and veggies. I make them just steam them and thin with water if needed. I also add rice to his bottles and foods. The doc says he is long and lean and had no problem with the solids. We didn't ask first just following what all the ladies in my family have done in the past.
