An answer for when someone asks how much you weigh

This really only goes for if the person is older, but I find mostly the people who shamelessly ask this question are of the "greatest generation"...

Anyway an old lady at my gym today saw me getting out of the pool, and after making baby-related small talk said "oh you've gained a lot of weight" and then asked exactly how much weight I'd gained. For some reason, I just gave her the honest answer, which caused her to wag her finger in my face, tell me not to gain any more, and proudly announce to anyone within earshot that she only gained 20 pounds when she was pregnant.

Here's how I wish the conversation had gone:

"So, how much do you weigh?"
"Why don't you guess? And then I'll guess how many decades older you are than me!"

  • I've never been asked how much I weigh or how much weight I've put on (except by like doctors and whatnot)

I didn't know people this stupid actually existed.

  • I had just been to my doctor the day before, and she said my weight gain overall was totally fine. I'm about 37 weeks, so of course I look huge. I'm not concerned because that woman said something, just annoyed. I think asking a pregnant woman about her weight is just as tacky as being like "wow, you look SO OLD. Like, how old are you? I can't even imagine what it must be like to be THAT OLD. I've never met someone as OLD as you!" In retrospect, probably a good thing I didn't have my wits about me, as I would have gone off!
  • My mom asked me that too- several times. I just say my doctor says I'm in the normal range- even though I've gained 40. It's inappropriate though!
  • A woman at the laundromat - who I've never met before - asked me the other day, but threw out a specific number. It was just so strange! She had no idea what Iooked before I was pregnant! I just said "Something like that" and she went on to tell me about all of her medical problems in detail. Sometimes you just have to laugh.
  • Lol, if the person asking me was overweight I'd probably be like "how much do YOU weigh?!" And then point out how rude it is to ask something like that.

Little old ladies though...like you said, different generation - I'd probably just say that my doctor was satisfied with my weight and leave it at that.
  • My mom keeps checking in on my weight, but only to remind me that she only gained 19 lbs when she was pregnant with me and my twin. She also gained 45 and 50lbs with my other two sisters AND NEVER LOST IT.

Anyways, I always tell her something like, I am right on track and the baby is growing so well.

  • My grandma was 110 lbs when she gave birth to my mom- was 105 when she got pregnant. She loves to ask me how much I have gained. I remind her that her weight gain was totally unhealthy and unrealistic and my doctors are happy with mine. Such a private question!

  • "None of your damn business!" Feel free to omit the damn.
  • People are so dumb!! I would say not near as much as what your packing in your left ass cheek. Or when it becomes your business I will tell you. Who cares? And the weight thing can be such a fluke. A friend of mine was at the gym everyday and gained way more than what I have and I take my dog on a walk a few times a week. I should be the one that gained more. Who cares, we are growing a human we all deserve major kudos for that.

When I get that you are huge statement from people, I respond with "this is what ten extra pounds looks like on my body, makes you wonder how ten extra pounds would look on your if it was all in you belly." Surprisingly no one is ever offended with that response and seem to immediately touch their own belly. It's pretty funny!! :))

I alway like it when men or women who are clearly bigger than I, make those comments! Ridiculous!!
  • After reading this thread, we went to BBRU last night and DH was trying on a baby carrier. The sales woman was an older woman and kept saying to *him* "This is one of the best-selling carriers, but if you gain 5 pounds it won't fit, so you can't gain any weight," and actually reached out and touched his stomach to make the point. It was pretty funny since the moms are the ones who usually get the weight comments, not the dads!
  • My great aunt always tells me I look big and has asked about my weight gain. Whatever! I just say that my pregnancy is going well and I have healthy babies (this is my 3rd pregnancy).
  • If it's someone I know well I'll be honest but with strangers? I just tell them that "I've gained the amount my doctor wanted me to" so that they don't have an opinion.
  • A lady I work with, but am not close to, asked this twice with my first. The first time I told her I was within the normal weight gain range. The second time I told her it was none of her business. Both times we were in the break room getting morning coffees and there were several people in there with us. Not cool, lady!

This time she hasn't asked once.
  • It's crazy how your weight becomes such a topic of open discussion for people when you're pregnant! I've had some grandmas ask me how much weight I've gained and I'm usually shocked into answering. A friend had some health problems during her pregnancy and had a lot of trouble keeping and putting on weight - naturally a worrying situation for her - and people were just as vocal about how little weight she'd gained. People need to chill with the weight talk to expecting mom! It's rarely encouraging and should be just between a doctor and patient with how many factors there usually are in every unique situation!
  • Honestly it's a common question. I get told I'm huge and I've must of gained a lot of weight. Than ask do I plan on dieting after I give birth. I have a hard time putting on weight. With my first child I didn't gain or loose any weight. This is my second and I have only gained 1 pound. I have tried everything to gain weight. My doctor is ok with it and that's all that matters.
