Baby may not be growing 30 weeks

Hello ... I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant with a baby boy and have only gained 3-4lbs. My doctor says it's normal and that it might be just baby weight. But now he wants to do growth ultrasounds every week! Has anyone not gained any or much weight and still having a normal size baby?

Re: Baby may not be growing 30 weeks

  • This question may require some background. If you're starting overweight vs under or normal weight could have a lot to do with those things. Obviously though your dr is taking steps to ensure all is well with baby, so good luck!

  • I lost weight during the first tri, and have not gained any since then. My doctor is not concerned. I feel like there must be something else contributing.

  • Thank you! I'm normal weight (5'8" and 145 lbs) and have been eating 5-6 small meals a day as he indicated. I'm just scared because he started off saying it was normal but now wants to see if the baby is growing since I measured the same on my last two appts
  • I had a similar scare this week. I am also 30 weeks, but have only gained about 9 lbs thus far. My weight has stayed the same for the last two appointments so my doctor ordered an ultrasound to check the baby's growth. Luckily, everything was fine and the baby is measuring on track! Hopefully it will be the same for you! Good luck!

It's probably just a precaution. Most women gain the most weight in the third tri, which you're only 2 weeks into. If your doctor isn't concerned, I wouldn't read too much into the fact that they're wanting to do an ultrasound to double check in baby. And since babies grow at different rates at this point, they'd have to do multiple ultrasounds to verify proper growth.
  • I am 35 weeks, baby is weighing a bit over 5 lbs. I have not gained a pound. I eat, I really really eat but I guess baby is just taking it all. My doctor isn't worried as long as baby is gaining. I will admit that it freaked me out for a long while but I feel much better after getting the growth scans. Certainly not what I expected to happen during my pregnancy but I'll take it I guess.

What a relief! I guess I'll know once they start doing them every week. I just hope and pray I get your same result
  • I have been measuring ahead every week and two weeks ago I was measuring under. The next week I was back up again. Doctor said baby's position can change the results. Hopefully all is well.
  • That makes sense. Thank you for sharing, I feel much better.
  • I'm pregnant with baby #4 and will be 30 weeks tomorrow. I started overweight and I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes. As of Thursday, I am still down 7 pounds but baby is healthy. With DD1, I gained 6 lbs and she was 5lb 15oz and DD2 I didn't gain a single pound but also didn't lose any and she weighed in at 6lb and 14oz.

Unless your doc seems concerned, I wouldn't worry too much. All of our bodies and every pregnancy is different. Best of luck!
  • You really just need to get an US ASAP, that is the only way to know. Your size could have nothing to do with it. My stomach has been measuring on week since they started taking it around 24 weeks, but my baby has been measuring small since they started to do growth at 20 week anatomy scan. Baby is in 9th percentile, so I have to go for weekly dopplers and biweekly growth scans at Maternal Fetal Center. I got extra genetic/infection testing and all normal. Baby has been growing on same curve so at this point they just think small baby. But they still want to monitor me weekly as baby is under 10th percentile and considered IUGR. When I go to my regular OB right next door she measures my stomach and everything looks fine. I've gained about 15-20 lbs on my original 130lb frame. Point is, you just never know what's going on inside until they look!
  • I lost 25 pounds from beginning of pregnancy to end. My baby was born perfectly healthy at 8 lbs 7 oz.
