Elective Ultrasounds

My OB gave us a pamphlet with a list of different packages we can purchase that are for Elective Ultrasounds starting at 12 weeks. They all include the 3D ultrasound pictures and some of the packages include 4D video clips of the baby's movement. This will be our first child so its all new to me. I am just curious if anyone else is planning on doing this or have done it in the past? I know its not covered by insurance, but we are really considering doing it.

Re: Elective Ultrasounds

  • I had a gender scan done at 16 weeks. I'm planning on doing it again with this baby. It was worth it to me! :)

  • Our elective scan with my DD at 12 weeks was for the NT scan (and for this LO is standard procedure to perform prior to the Panorama blood test, that will be in 1.5 weeks). With my DD we got both a 3D and 4D images at that scan.

  • Just a tip - one of the sonographers told me that you don't get the cute 3D images until about 32 weeks. Before that, their little faces don't have any fat and look a bit bony/pointy, to say it nicely.
Another thing with the 3D/4D images I've watched - they're super tricky to get. It's luck of the draw if baby is in a good spot, doesn't have its face tucked into the placenta, or isn't covering its face with those tiny little fists (or feet!).
Just things to consider if you have to put a chunk of change down for all of these elective scans.

As for us, we'll definitely do the anatomy scan around 20 weeks. DH wants the NT scan at 12 ish weeks. Otherwise, I'm okay not doing any more elective scans.
  • I think the 4d pictures are super creepy... is it just me?

    They're creepy. Not just you.

OP - I've never heard of elective ultrasound packages, but if given the option I'd probably get one or two but maybe not the 3D/4D ones - they weird me out.

Not sure if these pictures are readable but here but on the front of the pamphlet it does say its a special service provided by their office.  I was just wondering if anyone else was given these options.  I do agree they do appear a little weird.
  • I get lots of ultrasounds right now since we got pregnant via IVF-FET and will continue until about 12 weeks anyways so we probably won't but I just want to share my 3d ultrasound I had done 7 years ago this October when I was pregnant with my son and I think it's pretty good. I was 24 weeks at the time but I don't know if you have to start at 12 or they let you pick when.
  • We do them at my office... we tell moms to come between 28-31 weeks so the baby has so chubby cheeks but also time to bring her back if baby doesn't play nice.
we RARELY scan in 3d mode before then because it just isn't what moms want to see... promise
    have fun with it though

My office only does them at the anatomy scan (18-20 weeks) so I've considered being a "training subject" at the Informed Choices clinic that recently opened in town. I see my OB for the first time on Tuesday (11w3) so I'll see then if he's going to schedule me for extras because of DDs growth restriction and go from there.

@pinottoparenthood I totally agree, they're kinda freaky. Idk why, they just get me.

  • We did the 4D and because our rambunctious son wouldn't be still and keep his hands out of his face, they didn't charge us. We thought what we saw was good enough to pay for but didn't argue.

  • I'm from the UK and planning to get a sexing scan at 16 weeks just because we can't wait to shop! My OH is a little reluctant since I showed him images of 4d scans and says he finds them weird! We shall see! Maybe we will end up waiting until the Hospital scan at 20 weeks.
  • I did at 16 weeks last time because I had a brilliant idea for Mother's Day and needed to know the sex.
  • I think the 4d pictures are super creepy... is it just me?

    Super creepy and unnecessary
  • I am planning to the do the elective scan to determine the gender because they can usually do so a lot earlier than the doctor due to the better technology I think. Why not find out the gender early?? :):)
