I assume it's not, but is it possible to get short term disability to cover maternity leave outside of an employer sponsored plan? (We are only 4 in my office so we wouldn't have enough to make an employer sponsored/employee paid plan).

We are only 4, too! I looked into this and discovered it's either impossible or too expensive in my state, but that there is a state program that will provide a small stipend. We can get through a leave, just hoping hard I won't need bed rest before giving birth...
Lurker here - My car/home insurance is through StateFarm and they offered me a STD disability policy. However, they usually pay at 65% of your normal rate and you have to use all your vacation/sick time first. So if you have lots of vacation time built up, do the math. It might be that once you pay premiums for a year + that you will have paid enough to cover what you would have been paid out.
There is no such as a policy just for maternity though. So you could start paying it now and it would take you a year to get pregnant, so then you end up paying 18 months worth of premiums before you get a pay-out.
