2nd Trimester

Prenatal Vitamins

Does anyone forget to take your prenatal vitamins? I always forget. At least twice a week in the middle of the night and remember I didn't take it. I've never been a big vitamin girl and I've changed my vitamins at least three times. Why do they have to be so big? They make me gag when I take them and the smell of them is repulsive. Are there any alternatives? I saw the gummies but they have high fructose corn syrup in them which doesn't seem like a wise choice to nourish my baby. The good thing is I eat pretty healthy, albeit a lot these days. Any suggestions on the prenatal vitamin tip?

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • The vitamins aren't really nourishing baby, YOU are. The gummies will be fine especially if they get you consistently taking them. Baby takes what it needs from you and the vitamins make sure you don't get any vitamin deficiency.

Eh, the vitamins also supplement with additional folic acid which is shown to decrease the risk of neural tube defects by 70% and DHA helps baby's brain develop.

  • Yeah, also gummies have no iron.  I take Rainbow lights...they are big but just need 1 a day and I feel great on them...they don't cause constipation like a lot of the other vitamins out there.  Good luck!
  • the vitamins are more so for you than for your baby. they provide your body with the vitamins & minerals that your baby needs & will be taking from you. you can't give your baby the folic acids & other important nutrients if you dont ingest them, which is basically what the vitamins are for.
you dont HAVE to take them, but if you decide not to, you HAVE to make sure the nutrients your not getting from taking the vitamins are in the foods you're eating. otherwise your health, & quite possibly the baby's health, could suffer.
i hate vitamins too, but i have very little will power when it comes to sticking to a stricked diet, lol. so i choke them down. maybe talk to your doctor about about alternatives to taking prenatals next time you visit..?
  • Get a medicine organizer, fill it with your vitamins, put it in a spot on your counter where you will see it every single day.

  • You could set an alarm on your phone that repeats every day! I'm on the GNC prenatals, it's 4 pills and none of them seem overly big to me. Maybe experimenting with a new brand would help.
  • I forget sometimes too for the same reasons as you. I take them at night because they make me nauseous but they smell and taste disgusting so I have to take them with oj or something flavored or I'll throw them right back up in my mouth. Try and take them at the same time as you do something every day. If you have a dog, take them right before you take it out. You know you won't forget to take the dog out!

Although you should still try to take them, my OB always told me that PNVs were actually most important before you got KU and 1st trimester when everything is developing. PNVs made me sick most of my pregnancy with DS, so I took 2 Flintstones daily.

  • Garden For Life prenatals are the best and cleanest prenatal on the market. My suggestion is take before you eat b/c your food helps your body receive the vitamin better.
  • I wouldn't worry about the amount of HFCS in a tiny gummy vitamin. I will say though, I think they taste terrible. I need something without iron and they are the cheapest and easiest to find, but I really hate taking them and wish I could swallow them whole instead!

  • I always take mine right after dinner every night. Since I always eat a meal at dinner (versus snacking throughout the day, and for breakfast and lunch), it makes it hard to forget. Also, I leave the bottle on the kitchen counter so I will have to see it, rather than putting it away. It was hard to remember at first, but now I never forget. Good luck!
  • I take the gummy's and love them. They only have 5 calories in them so I wouldn't worry too much about the intake. Just that your taking something
  • Set an alarm on your phone and find vitamins that work for you. All gummies don't have high fructose corn syrup.
  • I keep my PNV on my night stand and take it every night before bed. I take Womens One A Day Prenatal with DHA.

  • I just ran out of my prenatals. How long are you supposed to be taking them? Your whole pregnancy? I'm 23 weeks...
  • You're supposed to take them still. Ideally starting before conception, during pregnancy, and during breast feeding.

I do the exact same thing ^. I also take a probiotic vitamin. I've been please with the one a day prenatal. Has everything I need and is easy to swallow. :)

  • I keep them on the table, and I take mine with dinner. My husband, and son know I have to take it so they help remind me too. Best of luck.
