In need of some advice. I have been nursing my son for about 3 1/2 months now and pumping also. He gets bottles now that he is at day care and from dad occasionally. I am majorly overproducing on a daily basis >80 ounces a day. We are now out of freezer space. I donating to the milk bank and attempting to sell excess milk on only the breast with no success . I don't want to stop nursing and need advice on how to decrease my supply without drying up. Any thought are greatly appreciated :)

Re: in need of advice

  • Can you drop the # of pumping sessions to reduce your body's "demand" for milk production?
  • Loading the player...
  • Just wanted to say that I am so jealous of how much you produce.  It was hard not to cry after only getting 3oz. after 20 minutes of pumping.

You could start to drop pumping sessions gradually.  Start with dropping one a day for about a week and then cut back another one if needed.

  • Agreed, I'm overjoyed when I get 12 in a day--just enough to feed for the next workday. Have you asked an LC or pediatrician about other organizations where you can donate?

I heard peppermint reduces supply but I don't have facts to back it up, but maybe look into foods and herbs that can help slow it down, just as there are those that boost supply?
  • May be a little intrusive but are you on birth control pills?if so you can use the regular pills and not the mini pills.
  • Thanks for advice. Have started to decrease pumping sessions during the day and not pumping as much off. I am not on birth control , we are wanting #2 sooner than later .
  • If you are in the states check out Human Milk 4 Human Babies. You could probably become a long term donor and they'd pay for your supplies.
