August 2015 Moms

Momma bear mode, activate.

So, after baby and I were discharged from the hospital my in laws from out of town were staying with us. My younger bil and sil both had a cold. My mil said they could hold my baby as long as they washed their hands. I was wary and reluctantly said ok. Now I am paying for it.

At almost three weeks old, my baby has been sick for more than half her life. And I am pissed off about it. She has such a hard time sleeping/eating because her nose is clogged, so I have to use the sucker before every nap/feeding and she hates it. It helps, but man does she scream. Also, my mil thinks I'm being over dramatic about all of this. She isn't the one that has to listen to her newborn struggle to sleep or eat.

Moral of the story, if you are wary, don't let someone pressure you into something. Period. Go with your gut.

  • I hope your lo feels better soon!
  • @kelseyrayay what baffles me is after four children, she thought this was ok. Now I'm on a strict, if you are sick, stay away from her, policy. Mainly it's just me, h, and my in laws that are Still with us. (Who, are on my side about the whole thing)
  • Never feel bad putting your foot down. At the end of the day this is your child and you need to do what you feel is best.

  • This is precisely the reason my baby had viral meningitis at 12 days old.

  • My BIL's GF did this! It put my lil girl in the hospital. Some people just don't think! It's infuriating.
  • So sorry! Ts&Ps!
  • I'm on that policy too. My cousin had a fever a day before coming down. I wouldn't let her near him at all. She couldn't understand why I wouldn't let her near him!

Never feel guilty about protecting your child. DS was in the hospital at 2 weeks because I wasn't verbal enough. Now I am a clean hands Nazi. "Have a cold? You can't hold?" <-- I actually say this.

  • Ahh this is scaring me! My boyfriend brought home a cold and had to miss two days of work. Now I've caught it. Luckily DD is showing no symptoms but I'm terrified! We decided it was best that I assume all baby care responsibility while he is sick, but I caught him sneaking in a cuddle session while I was making food yesterday. Ugh.
  • My husband got sick from work so I quarantined him to our bedroom until it passed. Do whatever it takes to keep them well for at least the first month, even if it means that you will have to be a jerk. I hope your baby starts feeling better soon
  • Hope your baby feels better! This is why I don't let anyone who has been sick or been around germs touch Evelyn. None of our nieces and nephews have touched her either. I also refused my mother's pleas to go visit my grandmother who stays sick. I have sanitizer in almost every room, too. I am that crazy FTM. Lol

That sucks! OP have you tried infant saline drops for her congested nose? You drop them in her nose to help bring the mucous out and then use the sucker. My toddler caught a cold and then passed it to DD2 at 3 wks old too, poor little thing was so congested she could hardly eat, it was awful :( the drops really helped though

If you're breastfeeding, I think the baby will get antibodies from you as you fight off the bug. Hope you both heal quickly and baby stays well!
  • No one has held my daughter but immediate family either at the hospital or at my house, and no one is allowed in my house if they are sick. I'm just not dealing with it. I was the same way with my older daughter. I made my mom who was visiting from out of state stay at a hotel on Christmas Day (DD1 was 7 days old) because she had been around my nieces and nephew who all had fevers and were throwing up the day before. She was so pissed at me, but you know what? She had a fever and was throwing up the day after Christmas. DD1 had a cold this past weekend and we were very careful to wash hands in between touching each kid and we made sure DD1 didn't touch DD2 or anything of hers. So far we are good. None of the rest of us caught it and she is healthy again. Once DD2 gets over 3 months I will probably start being a little more willing to let others hold her, but not right now.
  • Never let anyone pressure you when it comes to your kids. No one.

FX your baby feels better soon.

  • @aveline, yes I have. It helps a little, but not much because she is so congested.
  • I work at a preschool. I'm on maternity leave at the moment, but went to pick my check up. One of my coworkers asked to hold baby & I said as long as you or anyone around you (classroom kids) haven't been sick. She said, "oh, you're one of those moms." Uhm.. yes! I'm not going to let my baby get sick. It's absolutely ridiculous to try & belittle someone for caring for their child's health!!!

What a stupid B! Since its not her kid and she won't be the one dealing with a runny nose sick newborn.
