Favoring a side

So I didn't look through the baby symptoms thread but searched and couldn't find anything about it.

My baby prefers to look to the right almost always. I have to force him to look left. But when he sleeps or naps he takes turns on both sides. My mother said my brother had a favorite and they had to do ten repeats six times a day and he loathed it so trying to avoid that looking for suggestions on how to keep building those muscles as well.

Also wondering if anyone else has noticed/experienced this with their baby?

Re: Favoring a side

  • When burping my LO he will raise his head up and almost always look to the left (his left). He looks to the right when on his back, but it does seem he still favors the left just a smidge in that position too. I don't have to force him to look right, I can distract him to look right and he will. And he sleeps usually head to either side (maybe more so to the right?). So I've wondered this myself. Interested to see if anyone reports similar

  • I don't have an answer, but I roll a car around my LO when he's on his play mat each day, to make sure he is turning both ways. He likes watching the car (and when he's on his tummy, he likes when I roll it over his back like a speed bump). It's a fun way to make him turn his head.

This is my own invention so maybe this isn't helpful at all...
  • I noticed a favored side as well as a flatish side of head around 2 months. She had full ROM but prefered to look right. In her carseat she often leaned the right side of her head against the headpiece. After noticing I did everything to her left side ( I always sat on her left, put toys on her left) and put a full lengty mirror by the changing table so every time we change her diaper we hold her up facing it so she sees herself then turn her body to the right ( so she looks left at the mirror still) . Also when she slept we put her in the crib with her left side facing the room and right side towards wall (because she likes to look out) We are now 3 months and she no longer has a preferred side so we just alternate everything. Neck strength great. Head round!

It's a little comical to me because I'll try switching the way him or I are and he finds something to stare at the other direction. He's kinda a stinker I think if I stick with it he will be ok
  • Same here. My 3m old lo prefers to look left. I did the same as others have said..holding him so he has to look right, sitting on that side and showing him toys on that side. Alternating him in the crib didn't really work for us. He is losing some hair on that side but his head looks ok and his range of motion seems fine.

Roll a blanket/towel and put your baby on his/her side. This way your lo has to look the other way. This was advice given to me by an early interventionist.
  • I noticed my baby doing that, then noticed how hard it was to clean her neck on that opposite side so I talked to the doctor about it and she ended up having torticollis. She has to do physical therapy for the next 6 months to help stretch that muscle in her neck out and one of the recommendations (besides the steetching) was to do everything on the opposite side. Talk to her, musical toys, if you have other kids make them play on that side of her so she HAS to look that way.
It really has helped quite a bit.
  • my son prefers his left side and is developing a flat spot as a result. we are trying to get him to alternate and I bought a tortle for him to wear to keep him off of it. like everyone else said try to encourage him to look the other way and make sure it's not torticollis causing the preference.
