Another breastfeeding post

what are you breastfeeding ladies doing that helps soothe your sore boobs? Even after feeding or pumping I'm still sore and they're tingly feeling, but nothing seems to help. I know that they'll be sore, but this seems a little extensive lol. I feel like maybe they're not emptying all the way, but even if I pump before or after LO eats it doesn't seem to go away....any suggestions are welcome :)

Re: Another breastfeeding post

  • I was having some pain after pumping too and thought maybe they was still some milk "stuck" in them. I started gently massaging them when it seemed like the flow was slowing. I am getting a good amount more pumped and seem to have less pain/discomfort after.

  • LOTS of nipple cream. Letting them air dry helps me as well.

Maybe look into a plugged duct or thrush if those don't help.

Seeing a LC can't hurt either.

    Good luck!

  • I do that too and it seems to help a little, I have seen the LC and they say that he latches great and supply is good...they also gave me the name of a nipple cream that has three things in it that helps actually heal, soothe and will treat thrush if it's there too, my doctors office call it triple nipple cream and it's amazing! It healed my cracked nipples quick! Just wasn't sure what others were doing for the pain/discomfort

@emmacake08 Both lol, but more so the breast tissue. The nipple cream helps with the nipple pain.

Do you pump before or after LO eats?

I apply some lanolin after feeding, I don't wear a bra at night (and just a supportive Cami during day), and then I might take some Tylenol. They are still somewhat sore but these things help me. I've also thought about putting a pack of frozen veggies or whatever on them ...haven't tried that yet but I'll let you know.
  • If it's the breast it sounds like it could likely be a plugged duct.

  • If it's more your breast tissue I would try a warm compress while pumping or nursing to try to get all the milk out and work out any plugged ducts. I have the lanisoh therapearls breast pads that you can microwave and help get the milk flowing. You also can freeze them too for cold therapy. I really like them and got them on Amazon.

  • I have these 3 in 1 breast therapy gel pads from Lansinoh. They are wonderful! You can use them hot or straight from the freezer.
  • Thanks ladies!! I'll give the heat a shot first, cold seems like it would make things worse lol

  • I use lanolin cream for my nipples, it's all natural so you can even apply if and BF right away with no concerns. Also, the nurse told me to express some milk and let it dry on my nipples because it has its own healing properties. For the sore breasts, try putting a warm towel on them before you feed or pump, and then a cold towel on them when you out finished!
  • Lansinoh therapearls are amazing!!!! And they also have these stick on things called "soothies" that you leave on between feedings/pumping. Medela has a version called hydrogel , but lansinoh is cheaper and I like that they're round vs square like the medela. And always lanolin nipple cream. I have a few tubes of medela nipple cream from the hospital which is good and I had bought mustela brand while I was still pregnant and I layer that on top. I had really bad cracking from the medela pump in the beginning. It's gotten so much better after using those products.
  • I've tried the medela soothie things and I felt that they hurt more than they helped...I think the cold made them hurt/tingle/burn more than before I used them. The lansinoh cream wasn't healing mine it was just mostrizing, but once I got the triple one they healed....but they still hurt. It's almost like they're so sensitive that they hurt, if that makes sense :/
  • I used a heating pad when mine were sore. I'm not sure if it helped in the long run but while I was using it, it felt good!
  • Coconut oil is wonderful. All purpose nipple ointment is also amazing but is prescription.
  • I have these 3 in 1 breast therapy gel pads from Lansinoh. They are wonderful! You can use them hot or straight from the freezer.

These! Plus lanolin nipple cream! Gel soothie pads are nice too but kinda stick to poop so recommend squeezing boob a bit to get a little milk to ease them off. Also massage all around the breast to ease up all the ducts.

I also get severe burning pain around lateral parts of breast.. Towards armpits n LC said that it's nerve pain from nipples. Ibuprofen helps take the edge off.
  • Warm compress before pumping/feeding and ice packs after. Also mother love nipple cream.
  • @srm1987 sorry for taking so long to get back to this. I had been pumping after but now doing a little before (seems to be to fast for DS when I'm full) and then when he is done. The massage is do while he's eating and when I pump after he is done. Yesterday I resorted to warm compress while massage because I still had some rather hard, sore spots when we were all done. Today's shower is going to focus on breast pain releif!
  • I've been pumping and I'm only getting about 2 ounces every 2 hours so I'm worried LO isn't getting enough. I'm gonna try the fenugreek and more dairy products as well as seeing the LC again this week. Hopefully it all helps and we can get back on track. The heating pad does seem to make it a little easier though. I think my boobs might have an infection though, cause they hurt/burn after feeding and pumping, doesn't matter which. I didn't know it would be this hard :((
