Exercise

Hi!

I am 22 going into 23 weeks pregnant. My bump has not become restrictive yet and is still  quite tidy and neat which has allowed me to continue my regular exercise routine however i am worried that despite the doctors / midwives telling me to continue as normal that i am heightening my chances of a miscarriage.

I would be grateful if other active mum / mum to be could pass on some reassurance / advice.

Thanks :)

Re: Exercise

  • As long as you aren't introducing new exercises (or overdoing it) you are probably fine.  I am still biking and doing some LIGHT lifting to kept my arms tone.

  • Exercise is good for you in pregnancy and helps keep you in shape for labor. Just make sure you drink lots of water and can always carry on a conversation while exercising. If you are too out of breath to talk you are overdoing it. Exercise has not been shown to increase the chance of miscarriage at all.

  • I workout every day - light cardio and light toning. I usually Google pre-natal videos.
  • If your doctor told you it's fine, I assure you it's fine
  • I'm almost 20 weeks. . . i'm still running.  I just go for shorter runs at slower paces, and sometimes drag my husband along in case something were to happen.

From what I have been told by doctors, exercising within reason won't cause miscarriage.  Remember to stay hydrated and to keep your heartrate and a reasonable level. . . don't overexert yourself or overheat.

I ask my doctor at every appointment if it's ok to continue......just to reassure myself.
  • I'm 23 weeks with twins, so my uterus is measuring 30w.
It depends on what you were doing previously. My doctor said continue as normal but knock it back to 75% and then I explained I did high intensity interveral training and she quickly changed her tune. I then saw a PT and now do light cardio and weights with exercises designed not to use any core or interfere with my bump. For example, avoiding push ups because I have no core muscles to stabilise my back. The aim is not to get my heart rate too high or overheat.
  • I'm 21 weeks with twins and my Dr said continuing to exercise is good and that I should contunue. As mentioned above don't introduce new exercises and she also said for me not to let my heart rate go above 150. Talk to your Dr because everyone is different. I do cardio at least 5 times a week for an hr and lift light weights to stay toned. I was doing crossfit before becoming pregnant.
