Need Support... FISH Results Tomorrow

Last Wednesday we had our NT ultrasound and bloodwork done. After the u/s my doctor came in and frantically told us that our baby's nuchal translucency measurement was above normal and she wanted to send us to a specialist immediately. She was talked a mile a minute and told us she knew that our bloodwork would come back elevated for one of the trisomies (how she knew this I do not know). We saw a perinatal specialist on Friday and he did an u/s, said the NT measurement was 3mm, and gave us a 20% chance something would come back alarming if we had a CVS. We had the CVS yesterday and last night got a call from my regular OB about the results of the NT bloodwork. Trisomy 18 and 13 were low risk but Trisomy 21 (down syndrome) went from a 1 in 600 and something chance to 1 in 40. I am almost 30 years old and she said my chances were that of a 43 year old. She was again frantic and all over the place while telling us the information and said if she were a "betting girl" she would say that the baby had down syndrome. Tomorrow we will receive the FISH results from the CVS - but we know that the full test results will give us all we need to know.

What I need here is support. I am devastated - partly due to the fact that the doctor has been doom and gloom while our perinatal specialist and the genetic consultant has been nothing but uplifting - so I am not panicking and nervous of the results.

Has anyone ever had the 1/40 for downs and had a baby that is healthy?

  • Hi! I have no experience with this but I want you to know that I will be thinking of you and your family! I am so so sorry that your doctor is making things so much more stressful for you. I am glad that your specialists being more calm and collective for you.

  • Sorry you're going through a tough time. Sending out prayers for you, and please let us know how things turn out.
  • Seems like a lack of professional courtesy... T&Ps for you and just know that here is nothing you did/could have done/can change except educate yourself and tackle whatever challenges present themselves head on.   Please let us know how you get on.

  • I'm sorry you're going through that and that your doctor is making the situation worse. 1/40 means theres a very good chance your baby won't have downs syndrome. Easier said than done, but try not to stress yourself more than necessary before you hear the real results. I'll keep you in my thoughts!

  • I'm so sorry that happened to you. Even devastating news from a medical professional should be presented in a calm manner. I agree with everyone though, look at the chances of a healthy baby but prepare for any range of news. Keep us updated.

  • I'm really sorry you're going through this. I hope you get a good outcome. Your doc sounds like a dud. I'm sorry she's been so insensitive. Once you get past this, if you have an option to find someone new, that's what I'd look into.

  • 39/40 chance there is no Downs Syndrome. Your Dr does not seem to have social skills. It's natural once you know your chances are higher than normal to worry and wonder what you will do if something is wrong, so let yourself have those feelings without obsessing.

Big hugs and love and prayers coming your way. <3

  • Ditto everything everyone else said. Your Dr. is lacking in the bedside manner department. Lots of T&P's coming your way for you, your H and your little one.
  • @BCH818 yes yes yes I am not sure about the exact numbers but same happened to my friend. One of my best friend's result is above normal and she has a healthy baby now who is 6 months old and totally totally normal :) so please don't worry I was so stressful before my double test and talked to her she told me that sometimes results can show some abnormality but the babies keep growing healthy. Please don't forget that these test only have %60 guarantee. And my doc is a famous pro about these double tests told me that these are only procedure if you have normal result it does not mean your baby will be normal for sure or of the result says there are some abnormality it doesn't mean that your baby will have down syndrome %100 . So hope these help please try to relax. Fingers crossed for you.

  • My doctor told me that in these tests, they have to consider 1% as a high risk - which is totally a low risk in my opinion- due to the nature of the tests. He also mentioned that these tests are never 100% reliable. I guess your doctor just tried to warn you but was lacking social skills. Be positive, I believe that you'll hear some good news very soon!

  • Hope you are holding on well. My father's surgeon called him and told him over the phone (while he was alone) that he had cancer. Some doctors do need lessons on bedside manners. I'm sorry your doctor isn't taking your feelings into consideration.

  • My girlfriend had her 20 weeks scan. They noticed two abnormally large blood vessels in the brain. Her amniotic fluid was also at the level for Down Syndrome. The doctors were convinced her son Gabriel had Downs. He's absolutely a typical kiddo!
