Old wives tales about gender

edited September 2015 in April 2016 Moms
I thought it would be interesting to share old wives tales that each of us have heard about finding out the gender! Which ones have you heard?

Re: Old wives tales about gender

  • None are almost always right. They all have a 50-50 shot.

  • None of them are almost always right, they are all 50/50.

For my son, I think 7 out of 8 old wives tales methods I looked at predicted girl.
This included: Chinese calendar, duration of morning sickness, heartrate, side placenta implanted on, craving sweet or sour foods, carrying high or low, ring on a string, and acne. The only one that wasn't wrong was the food cravings.

  • @AnnikaD20 what was ur craving for boy?
  • @AnnikaD20 what was ur craving for boy?
Just because that was the only one that wasn't wrong doesn't make it any more accurate than the rest. It's still 50/50.

The old wives tale is that with girls you crave sweet and with boys your crave sour. My main cravings were hot and sour soup from my favorite Chinese restaurant, citrus, and pickles.

  • Was just curious, with my boys I craved cheesy, savoury and more dairy, with my girl I was more sweeties and fruits.
  • I'm not aware of too many but have heard that citrus cravings mean a girl. I also had a (distant) Italian relative try to swirl a necklace around my belly the other day...we didn't get too far, probably because of the look on my face. LOL. (P.S. @kimmecakes I craved vinegar and chocolate milk with my son.)

  • I'll buy into the citrus for a girl. With DD if it was orange flavored I would eat/drink it. We went through a lot of mandarin oranges and orange sorbet.

  • @Ready4theParty, and I detested oranges while pregnant with my son, but usually love them. Who knows, though, and orange sorbet does sound fantastic.

Yeah they aren't my go to this time around. Although I can't stand meat, outside of lunch meat. Right now it's melon and cheese, the only consistent things on the menu.

  • I crave a little bit of everything ranging from Cherry icees to fried pickles lol
  • My aunt recently told me all she craved was citrus during her two pregnancies. She has two girls. Who knows!
  • Well, if craving citrus means girl, then I guess that one didn't work for me either. Cause I craved all the limeade, oranges, and lemon flavored everything with my son.

  • Ive heard of ones where you can tell by the shape of your belly- very round vs. A lil droopy in the lower front.
  • I think old wives tales are good clean fun, but you have to remember that most of them originated in an era where there were no ultrasounds or blood tests and women had nothing to go on besides pure speculation for 9 months. I'm thankful we live in a day and age where it's possible to find out with some actual certainty.

The very thought of OJ made me want to puke the entirety of my pregnancy with DD, which is saying something because I never had any ms, just nausea. Orange/Grapefruit was my only aversion with her.

I did a blog post the night before our anatomy scan of 20 wives tales I found online. The result was 11-9 girl. 55% = Fail.

I don't think most people put a lot of faith in them......
  • Interesting about craving citrus means girl. I drank orange juice all the time when I was pregnant with my now 2 year old girl. Right now I'm craving fruit smoothies and tangy things. Chinese calendar says I'm having a boy. The heartbeat was 162, which would indicate I'm having a girl. We'll see. And yes of course this is just for fun and not meant to be taken seriously. Science wins.

  • I thought of another one this morning, though it's not until later in pregnancy. Something about gaining weight in your hips/butt/thighs meaning a girl, and beachball bumps meaning a boy. But I can say this one did NOT prove true for my first pregnancy. :)

  • My personal favorite was if you get the pregnancy glow it's a boy, but breakouts etc mean it's a girl - because she steals your beauty for herself. Wow.

I feel ya. It's like I'm 13 again - at least my acne says so! It'll be interesting to re-do the list and see which ones change with this baby, boy or girl. Unfortunately it looks like this one isn't changing.

  • Here's a big list of them: https://community.babycenter.com/post/a28444349/51_gender_prediction_wives_tales

Most are pretty silly sounding. The mom's intuition one actually probably has something to it though. It's from a real scientific study although the study only said mom's with at least 12 years of education could predict with 71% accuracy. Mom's with less than 12 years had like a 40% or something in that range.

I'm hoping for a girl & my face has been breaking out like crazy! Even if it's not true it's still exciting to have hopes for a girl lol
  • Has anyone heard of ot done the one with urine and baking soda?
  • @Knottie2891384 I've heard about it but still think it's 50/50. It'd be nice if it was pretty accurate
  • Have not heard of it...what exactly happens? (I'm envisioning the volcano project my son worked on...)

  • @cmerribury you mix your urine and baking soda together and supposedly if it fizzes you will have a boy and if it doesn't then a girl!

I kind of wanted to do this. I also read one about using Drain-O. H and I decided urinating on Drain-O was not a good way to spend my time.
  • Haha, OK, so slightly less explosive than I thought! :)

  • I def craved chocolate and sweets with my DD.
this time I do crave them but also veggies (yay! Want to be healthy this time around!)

As far as the wives tale about heartburn=hair, first time around... That was so true! She had so much hair!
