Hearing test,worried mom

My beautiful baby girl was born yesterday :) and we got discharged today cuz we were both doing so well! However she failed the hearing test on her right ear only. Left is fine. The hearing specialist said it was nothing to worry about that she probably has fluid or vernix clogging her ear. ( she was def covered in the vernex stuff the nurses were even surprised by the amount of white goo) i have an appt to retest her in 2 weeks as the gunk that they think is causing the issue will be absorbed or cleared out by then. She also said to be born deaf in one ear is extremely rare that it would be both not working and that shes not worried. But i AM worried even with statistic theres always a chance and im light weight freakin out. Anyone else go thru this??

Re: Hearing test,worried mom

  • My LO was born last month and failed the screen in his left ear...he was so close to passing that they retested him then and he failed in both ears!! I was so upset but the screener said she wasn't worried because he had "responses" in both ears and it was probably just fluid. He went back yesterday for the 2 week recheck and he passed it in the quickest amount of time you could!! Try not to worry, I know it's hard. I didn't realize how worried I was until he passed and I burst into tears. Most likely just fluid, good luck to both of you!!

  • Thank you! I kno the hearing specialist wasnt worried and i shouldnt either. But i mean come on im her mom thats what we do. And i feel like every parents worst fear is that something is wrong with thier baby. Im glad to kno you had a similiar experience and that everything is just fine! Im the brave face type of woman i never let anyone see that im worried i jus really needed to tell someone that i am! Hopefully same result as you and its jus gunk in her ear! Thanks for helping me not feel stupid for worrying!
  • Yep, my baby failed in her left ear while we were in the hospital. She failed twice before she finally passed the third time a week later while in the NICU. It really is nothing to worry about :) Very common.
  • My baby failed one in the hospital and passed both 3 weeks later! Try not to stress!
  • My parents are both deaf so I was tested twice and failed at birth. Was retested at 6 weeks and I hear just fine. Was your LO early at all? My audiologist SIL says that is a big factor in babies failing at birth when their hearing is normal. GL!
  • My DD failed on her right ear. Since I had to stay an extra day the retested her the following day and she passed. It was just fluid in her ear. The first person told us to keep her on her side to let the fluid come out. It worked. GL!
