help needed

In need of some advice. I have been nursing my son for about 3 1/2 months now and pumping also. He gets bottles now that he is at day care and from dad occasionally. I am majorly overproducing on a daily basis >80 ounces a day. We are now out of freezer space. I donating to the milk bank and attempting to sell excess milk on only the breast with no success . I don't want to stop nursing and need advice on how to decrease my supply without drying up. Any thought are greatly appreciated :)

Re: help needed

  • I'd think that if you stopped pumping as much, your supply will drop

  • I also had over supply (not as much as you though) and suggest: 1) Stop pumping. The more you pump the more you produce. 2) Feed on one side per feeding. So feed only off of right breast. Burp LO. Put back on right breast. Next feed do left breast. This helped my supply reduce. You can find other tips on kellymom.com
  • I have to pump during the day because become so engorged. Will pump off 15 ounces of go for 4 hours and is worse at night
  • Thanks for the suggestion !!
  • I would only pump when LO is scheduled to eat. Can you not donate more to the milk bank. I'm sure they wouldn't mind. I would just keep pumping and donating so you will always have a fresh freezer supply. Having an over supply is every breastfeeding moms dream. I finally have my over supply under control but it took me a while of no pumping but I stay at home with my LO so pumping wasn't necessary. In your case you have to pump at work. If your only feeding off one side I would try maybe just pumping one side at a time of you truly want to decrease supply. Or only pumping to get relief instead of emptying your breast. Your breast increase supply the more it's emptied and decrease by the amount of times they are full and stay full. But be careful cutting pumping sessions it's harder to build your supply back up once you have it down. Keep up the good work tho! You are living the breastfeeding mommas dream LOL!!

I had the same issue. I found it helped to just pump off what I could to feel comfortable (don't drain the breast). Each time you do this you'll pump for less and less. Eventually your body will learn how much it needs to supply.

I still wake up engorged at night if DS hasn't ate in a while. But not nearly as engorged as I used to be!!
  • How about block feeding? I used to only feed from 1 side for few hours so i can pump from the other side and then i noticed my supply had lowered, turns out it's method used to decrease supply! My supply is barely enough i wasn't looking to lower it lol
  • 80 ounces per day? Wow! I'm actually a little jealous. Before I gave up and waved my white flag I was doing good to get 10 or 12 ounces in a day.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies. Yeah that is what everyone has said . Wow! It was great to begin cause I could eat anything and still lose weight:). But now that I am back to work it is crazy and we have run out of space. Will have to try everything you guys have suggested !
  • I just recently got over my oversupply problem. My poor LO was having terrible dark green diarrhea with blood in it and gaining weight rapidly, over twice the rate he was supposed to. What helped me was to stop pumping altogether unless its absolutely necessary (but sounds like you have plenty saved up) and whenever you nurse nurse in the reclined, or even all the way laid back position. Engorgement is no fun but for me I also skipped a feeding with my breast and fed him a bottle instead that way my body realized I didn't need as much milk. Now he is getting a perfect amount and his poops have become normal again. Best of luck!
