How much milk are you pumping?

my baby is two weeks old and I am exclusively pumping every 2/3 hours (my baby did not take to breastfeeding and we are still trying) I am only pumping around 1.5 oz per breast. Is this normal or am I on the lower side of what I should be pumping?

Re: How much milk are you pumping?

  • I don't exclusively pump, but the last 2 times I've pumped, I got 2 oz total. I pumped about 1.5 hours after I fed him the one time and right after the morning feed the other time. Of course mine won't help you really Bc he already ate and depleted some milk from me before I pumped.

  • I EP and I get about 8-9 oz each time I pump. I used to pump every 2 hours but now that my supply is regulated I'm pumping every 3-4 hours. I would say 3oz every 2 hours is a little on the low side considering you're EP'ing. Do you have an LC you could consult with?

@CaliforniaDream87 how do you do this please let me in on your secret!!!

I pump no more then 2 oz on right boob and barely 1 oz on left boob. Definitely not enough to satisfy LO
  • I usually pump 2-3 ozs once a day.  The rest of the time I'm breastfeeding.
  • I'm pumping 4-5oz per pumping session and that's when it's on the low side. At two wks I would think you would be getting a little more. How often are you pumping? I suggest contact ing a LC also.

I started pumping in the hospital. I knew early on that BF'ing wasn't going to work out for us. I started off pumping every 2 hours (religiously, even in the middle of the night) which is what built my supply (supply and demand). Really is no secret-it's all about consistency. Now I pump every 3-4 hours or so and my supply is pretty much sustained.

  • I went back to work yesterday. I pump every 3 hours and get about 5-8 ounces each time which thankfully is plenty to feed her thru the day so far. These huge boobs are finally serving a purpose. However, my DD is almost 8 weeks old. I wonder if you're pumping less because your baby eats less at this age? No idea but at least it's early and you have plenty of time to work on it with a LC. Good luck!
  • I'm pumping anywhere from 4-8oz each time I pump.
  • Those of you getting up to 8oz... Is this how much your baby eats during a feed, or are you pumping that much to stash it?

I find if I pump every two hours (more or less) in the day, I'll get about 100ml per pump that night and for the next day or so. If I go back to pumping every time baby feeds (3-4 hourly), I only get about 60/70ml per pump the following day. My baby (3 and a bit weeks) seems happy with around 100ml per feed, or thereabouts. If not, or if I have less than 100ml to give him, I top up with formula (no more than 30ml). The most I've got in one pump so far is 120ml all up.

I'm a bit confused about all of this as I would have expected it to start going up a bit more. I had a great supply with my first baby but I never really pumped so I didn't pay attention to the volumes. I'm hoping I don't have to do this too long as it's beginning to do my head in!!
  • My baby is 2wks today. I usually pump first thing in am (bottle feed approx 3oz) and get 8oz total. I make sure to have 4oz available in fridge and freeze any additional milk. I'll usually pump and bottle feed 1 or 2 additional times during the day and get around 5-8oz total. DD eats every 2.5-3hrs during the day and up 2x at night. We nurse during the night. I've currently got around 80-100oz in freezer.
  • I am dealing with an over supply, which is a pain!!! I pump every 2.5-3 hours for 7 minutes, and get 6 oz. baby eats 4-4.5 oz at 4 weeks. My boobs are seemingly ALWAYS FULL, I feel like if I pumped for 10-15 minutes I'd have over 10 oz total. I don't want to do this because I'm trying to decrease the supply be decreasing the demand. Baby does not want to feed from these full breasts, so I've been doing a lot of pumping and bottle feeding.
  • I pump every 3 hrs but still barely producing 1 oz from right and 1/2 oz from left (I pump 30-60 minutes each time)...not sure the supply and demand saying is working out for me. Needless to say, I have to use formula also.
  • @kettlekitten I'm EP'ing so no baby doesn't drink 8oz per feeding. She probably only drinks 2-3. So the rest will be given to her in the next feeding. I also stash bags as I'm able to pump more than she needs right now.

  • I only pump once a day if I'm lucky - maybe 4 or 5 times a week - and get maybe 5 oz at this point. Baby is 4 weeks old. I hate pumping so I just started it recently.
  • I get 8-9 oz every 3-4 hours. I'm prone to an oversupply so this baby I was told to only pump when baby feeds instead of my more aggressive every 2 hour schedule I had with my twins. I was even told to only pump until I'm .5-1 oz above what LO takes instead of by time but I'm too paranoid about my supply.

  • So for those of you breastfeeding and pumping. When is it best to pump. LO is only 6 days old. She eats all the time.
  • I typically do it after the morning feeding because I feel the most full in the mornings. I didn't start pumping until she was three weeks old since I have three months off work and have plenty of time to build a stash, plus my supply seemed fine from the get-go.
  • I pump 3-5 oz in a session, and pump twice a day so that DH can give LO two bottles (one at night so I can sleep and one in the morning while I shower!). I pump once in the morning, the earlier the better, and once in the afternoon. I usually get a little more from the morning pump.
  • @JNOVA2015 how old is LO? My supply feels like it tanked but my friends think LO is just draining me at his 3 week growth spurt

I stopped pumping for 2 days during his 3 week growth spurt because he was eating every 2 hours

4 weeks yesterday! I only started pumping 10 days ago, but it's been pretty consistent across that time!
  • 3.5 week old baby. EP. Make 3.5 oz every 3 hours. Baby eats about 2.5 to 3 oz every 3 hours. Sometimes I supplement with a half oz of formula here and there if needed. (Baby's Only brand Organic with DHA). I find the amount of liquid I drink directly affects how much milk I get with every pump. Also, women are different, some make lots of milk, others don't.

  • I switch back and forth between pumping and nursing. I get 5-6 oz in 15-20 min. If I kept pumping beyond that, I'd get more. I've been pumping since he was born. At about 4 weeks, my pump sessions when from about 8 oz per session to only 4. It lasted a few days and then settled in the middle. He drinks about 4.5 oz per feeding. We add dry formula to the breast milk to increase the calories but otherwise no supplementing. Try more skin to skin time. That makes a difference for me.

  • I really notice my supply goes down if I don't eat enough! Make sure you're getting enough calories and hydrate.. It's easy to get busy!

If I'm taking care of myself properly, If I pump 15 mins every 3-4 hours I get about 5 on one side, 3 on the other....I mostly pump, but do nurse once a day, or so. Usually he just takes one side, and I pump the other.

    Good luck!

I only get 7 oz if I wait 6 hours to pump. If I pump every 2-3 I average 2 oz on a side. Usually with my left side producing more than the right. That's about 15-20 minutes of pumping. lc says that is average. Baby is eating 2.5 oz each feeding, but he averages 3-3.5 hours in between feedings. This has allowed me to have about 6 bottles on hand at all times.

I'm a little low the past 2 days. Little Bubba will be 2 weeks tomorrow, but i just found out I have a breast infection on my left side, so it's producing less than usual.

If you EP do you also do skin to skin time to help with increasing amounts you are able to pump?
  • If you EP do you also do skin to skin time to help with increasing amounts you are able to pump?

    Yup!
  • I briefly EP'd until we were able to get DD's lip and tongue tie fixed. I got about that much using my medela and another 2 - 3 oz pumping by hand. If you haven't already I'd try that!
  • I pump after 3 different feedings during the day, and then I also exclusively pump for the feeding before we go to bed while DH feeds LO either pumped milk or formula. I also offer LO pumped milk or formula after feeds throughout the day (average 8 oz/day).

The pumpings that happen after feeds typically are from .5 oz to 3 oz. When I pump before bedtime I usually get 1.5-3 oz.

I have a history of low supply, DS1 was lucky to get .3 oz in the beginning! Because I was stubborn and pumped as much as a working mother could for her first year, I was able to get more supply this time around. Not sure I'll be able to EBF eventually, but this time has been a lot better. LO only needs 20-24 oz/day currently (there's a formula LCs use- 2.5x baby's weight in grams to determine how many oz LO needs to grow).
  • @CaliforniaDream87 did you EP with your first LO? What's the key to success? I'm really getting drained from trying to BF. I don't have that mushy bondy attachment to it. I just want to feed my baby breast milk and we both be happy.
  • Idk the trick to having an ample amount of breast milk, but when I pump I can put out 8-9 ounces every 2-3 hours as well (if I didn't breastfeed baby). If I breastfeed baby, I usually let her feed on one side and then pump the other. On the breast that she doesn't feed on, I can get 4-5 ounces depending. If I pump out what's left on the breast she did feed on, then I might manage 1 ounce.

Also, how long has it been since you had your baby? I know that in the beginning I was really doubtful that I would produce milk, but by a week and a half after delivery I could produce quite a lot of milk
  • I only pump about 3 oz every 3 hours. Sometimes more sometimes less. Ds is 4 weeks old and putting out enough wet and dirty diapers and he has definitely gotten bigger but im still trying to increase my supply! 8 ozs a pump?! I wish lol

    Blessed  <3o:)
  • ^this! Just starting to pump more often, but I still am getting 2-5 ounces depending on when I pump and that's from both sides....trying to pump this weekend and not bf, see if that helps my supply and hoping that it will also help my nipples heal and not be so painful. Going to see the LC this week and hopefully that will help too.
  • I started pumping in the hospital after our little guy was born since our baby wouldn't latch on because I have flat nipples. I have tried the nipple shield and it does work sometimes but other times the baby and I just get frustrated and go back to pumping. I am getting 5oz out of each side every 3 hours so a total of 10oz in one sitting. I have been freezing one 5 oz bag every time so we have plenty saved when it's needed.
