Betas....

So I don't know if it just wasn't mentioned to me last time but my doctor had me go ahead and do a blood test the day I found out which made me 4w 2d. They called today and wanted me to do another blood test after telling me my levels looked good. They called this afternoon (I'm 4w 6d today) and said Friday my beta level was 1000 and today it is 6000. I don't really know anything about beta levels but I understand this is a good thing. Everything I look up concerning beta levels says they aren't very important or not very telling. I'm confused. My doctor is scheduling me for a u/s within the week. (History: I have a unicornuate uterus, several miscarriages, and high risk first pg which is why I think they are expediting this process).

Re: Betas....

  • I'm not a doctor, but that all sounds like positive news. The levels aren't as important as the doubling time (they like to see it double every 48-72 hours this early) and you seem to be doing that!

My doctor also scheduled a pretty early us after my betas came back good. He wants it for dating purposes. Every doctor's office is different though, you can always ask what they're looking for at the US!

Good luck and fingers crossed for a sticky baby!

  • Thanks! I just didn't know if anyone was schooled on beta levels bc I am surely not. They said it was a good thing and I guess I'm also a little panicked (happy but panicked) it may be twins by how they explained beta levels work.

  • I was actually wondering if that was high enough for twins! Didn't want to say it and sound like an idiot though.

Twins! Crazy. Do you have a family history of them?

  • From what I've heard, rapidly rising betas doesn't necessarily mean twins. You can be pregnant with twins and have the same betas as a singleton pregnancy. I'm not 100% on that but I believe I've seen that a few times.
  • It's my turn on my Dad's side and my husband's turn on his Dad's side haha

  • Fraternal twins run on the Mother's side and identical twins are just random freak happenings.

Normal Beta ranges vary dramatically, but as pp said it's the doubling time that is important. High betas are not a predictor for multiples.

The only way to confirm twins is with the u/s.

Careful what you wish for.... it's A LOT of work

Oh I'm terrified thinking about twins BUT if it happens it was supposed to happen. I'm just wishing for a healthy baby or babies.
