No fetal pole @ 5w4d normal?

Ok so, I had a follow up u/s today after having one exactly a week ago. Turns out that I'm a few days earlier than we thought. Today he said I'm around 5w4d instead of 6 weeks. Last week (which would have been 4w4d instead of 5 weeks like we originally thought), we didn't see anything but really thick uteran lining and a spot the doctor thought would be where the sac will develop. From Tuesday to Thursday my HcG levels went from 513 to 1100 which he was happy about especially since it was under 48 hours from one blood draw to the next. Today he called and wanted to check an u/s again just to see if there was improvement and we saw a gest sac and yolk, which is a total improvement, but no fetal pole yet. He said he thinks it was up against the wall but couldn't confirm. He had me get my HcG checked again today and I have another u/s scheduled for next Wednesday when I'll be 6w5d. Is it normal to not see a fetal pole at 5 1/2 weeks? Anyone else in this situation?

Re: No fetal pole @ 5w4d normal?

  • I had my u/s at 5 wks 3 days. We saw the gestational and yolk sacs. She said if we had done it transvaginal, we probably would have seen the fetal pole, but I have my suspicions about TVs and declined. I'm okay with waiting an extra week. She said everything looked as it should. I could have gone in for a follow up u/s tomorrow, but I decided to wait until my appt on Monday. It's just a few extra days and our chances of seeing more are greater. I'll be 7 wks. I hope you see it next week.

  • Mine was TV...got my HcG back from yesterday and it was 11,674, up from 1,100 on Thursday. Shouldn't we have seen something on u/s yesterday if they were that high??
  • I don't know what a fetal pole is, so I googled it. And the google says you don't even see a fetal pole until 6 weeks -- and that is with a TV ultrasound.

  • If you're having concerns, call your doctor back.  Just explain that in the moment you hadn't thought of these questions.  The truth of the matter is, I don't think any of us are really qualified to answer that, beyond googling and telling you what we read... which ostensibly, you could do yourself.  Never be afraid to call your doctor back.  Do they have a nurses line?
  • Ultimately progression is a good sign.  It's super easy to get yourself in a worry spiral, take a step back.  *hugs*

All of this. Going solely by Dr. Google it seems it's too early to see a fetal pole. Definitely call your OB to get a better explanation, though!
  • Oh I emailed my doctor back asking him once he emailed me the results. I was just seeing if anyone had similar situations. Thanks
  • They develop so fast at this stage so if you don't see a certain feature at this stage in a week or less it may be present. Dating ultrasounds are accurate but to a point. You know? It sounds like things are progressing. Update when you hear from your doctor.
  • Saw my doctor yesterday and got a TV US. Thought I was a little over 6 wks but only saw G sac and Yolk sac. Doc wasn't worried at all. Said I'm probably just earlier than we thought. I have another US on the 22, so we'll see what another 2 weeks will show. I'd try not to fret. I know it's hard.
  • My doc said fetal pole would be at 6 weeks and not to worry before then when I had my TV US this am... yours may say the same thing
  • Agreed with everyone that said CALL YOUR DOCTOR.

I love this board for support, and to pass the next 35 weeks. But honestly, none of us are doctors or qualified to answer this question. Our experiences will be different than yours. If you have concerns, call your doctor. I am sure they can answer better than any of us can.
