Anybody have a threatened miscarriage

On Saturday it was my son's third birthday and right before we left for the party I felt like I just started my period I went into the bathroom and noticed I was bleeding and when I got up from the toilet and noticed there was a good sized blood clot. I went to my sons party and about 4 hours later I went to the emergency room and all they could tell me is that it was a threatened miscarriage I'm still bleeding a little bit and worried they didn't really give me any knowledge of a to expect or what was going on. I'm wondering if I should go back to a different ER today to see if they'll give me an ultrasound I don't even know if I am still pregnant. I feel like it but I know it take several weeks.

Re: Anybody have a threatened miscarriage

  • Did they take blood to measure your levels? You will want to have blood tests 48 hours apart to determine if your levels are increasing appropriately.
    You should contact your OB.

  • Did you go to an ER or a L&D Triage? If it was only an ER, I would suggest going to the L&D. Have you talked to your doctor at all?
  • They did take blood and said my levels were fine. Since it was Saturday and a holiday weekend I haven't talked to my doc yet...I haven't even met her yet. I am currently 8w6d. I am thinking the ER again today to maybe put my mind at ease. I haven't really stopped sleeping since 10pm Sat night.
  • I had exactly this happen today. I called my OB & was sent to the ER (my hospital doesn't see you in L&D this early). They did bloodwork, a pelvic exam, and an ultrasound. The bloodwork came back normal, pelvic exam showed cervix was closed, and ultrasound showed everything right on track with appropriate progress/growth from my dating US last week. They had no identifiable source for the bleeding so my diagnosis was threatened miscarriage. I have instructions to call my OB tomorrow for follow up bloodwork & appointment. If I were you I would call my OB on call line tonight or just call the regular office tomorrow and describe your experience and ask about recommendations for follow up care. FX for you.
  • My cervix was slightly open...and I wish they would have done an US.
  • I have been getting the occational burst of blood since week 5. I was put on bed rest since then, but my doc says it could be a threat because of too much pelvic mpvement. All my US look fine and strong heartbeat. Just need to take it easy. I had one loss earlier this year and so far this time everything feels right and looking good.

Take care and positive vibes your way.
  • Call your doctor. Don't go to the ER.

  • I am going to call her right away in the morning. My first apt isn't until the 28th and that will put me at 12 weeks. I am just gonna continue to be in best reat until they can get me in.
  • Good luck! Fingers crossed for you!

  • Even if you have not yet had your first appointment, they will want to get you in as soon as possible. Sending you positive energy for tomorrow.

Also, OBs always have someone on call. You can call in the middle of the night. They will give you much better treatment than an ER.

  • I will be calling in about an hour or so..really nervous. Slight spotting again...it is like a rust color. I will be 9 weeks tomorrow so I am hoping they can get a heart beat through a doppler.
  • I started bleeding heavily after a trip to a museum with my family. Literally it looked like a crime scene. My husband rushed me to the ER. I was 11weeks at the time and I had bloodwork, pelvic exam and ultrasound done. My cervix was closed but the DR said I was having a threatened miscarriage. I later was told it was due to a sub hemorrhage. It was a Saturday and I made a apt to see my ob Monday. My ob reassured me everything was ok and it's very common. Since the bleeding stopped she wasn't worried. I'm now 18wks1d. I hope everything is ok but you should see your ob immediately. Let them know your situation and they should make a apt for you asap.
  • Well I have to wait another day...this is killing me. I have been waitig for almost 5 days! I still feel pregnant....I am so upset.
  • Today I go in to find out what is going in and why I was bleeding Saturday...I am nervous. I have tried to prepare us for the worse. Please continue to pray. Thank you
  • Hoping for the best! Thinking of you.
  • I had this happen too over the weekend
    No need to be alarmed
My doctor called me, and she said basically it's a term they use if anyone bleeds during the first trimester.

Many of these go on to full term.
she said it sounds scarier than it needs to be.

I pray that all goes well for you.
I'm worrying a bit still too, but I'm a lot less nervous.
  • Sending thoughts and prayers that everything is okay. Are you getting your ultrasound done today?

That's good news! I'm a first time mum to be at 10+4 weeks and also an Ob doc myself. As mentioned above bleeding in the first trimester happens to 20 -30 % of all women and is defined as threatened miscarriage. More than half of those women end up with a normal pregnancy. I have already had two episodes of heavy bleeding myself in the past six weeks but baby is doing well and growing fast. There is not much that can be done to prevent the bleeding and even the benefits of bed rest are under discussion amongst specialists. Every woman who experiences bleeding in pregnancy should see a doctor asap and it is standard routine to perform blood work, a vaginal exam and an ultrasound scan in such an event. I am very surprised that no ultrasound scan was done on you upon presentation to the ER and that you had to wait for five days for confirmation that everything was fine with your baby. Glad that it was good news after all
  • Yeah..My doc was very upset they hadn't done one either especially with all the troubles I already have had. She had prepared us for the worst...and I was basically in tears until I heard the lil heart beat. The threatened miscarriage is still in effect but there is no added stress now.
