Baby cries

so I have read that you are supposed to be able to differentiate your babies cries and know what each one means. DS cries exactly the same... I have tried to listen for differences and I can't find any. I am a music teacher and so my ears are well trained! I usually know what he needs but not from his cry. Am I the only one or do all of you hear differences in LOs cries?

Re: Baby cries

  • I definitely don't have good hearing. When DS cries I know what he wants but all cries sound pretty much the same to me! Even when I spent the week with my SIL and her 7 mo old baby I couldn't differentiate between the two babies! She always knew which one was crying, but to my mind it was a baby crying and I responded to them all! I think it's awesome that some people can understand baby cry language- I just follow my gut, which hasn't been wrong yet!

  • i cant really tell the difference in my los cry... The only thing that sounds different is when he does his "fake" cry usually when he wants to be picked up or cuddled. the rest all sound the same to me.
  • I can tell more from the way he is behaving when he cries. His cries sound the same to me too though. I feel better that I'm not the only one!
  • I wouldn't say she really has a different cry depending on each need, but she definitely had different levels. There's her general fuss, which is most common... when she just wants to be done with whatever she's doing. There's a "middle" legit cry, that usually comes if we can't respond to the fuss quickly enough (usually in the car). And then there's the "holy crap I'm really really unhappy!". This is rare and something that we respond to immediately. I've only heard it a few times though... and is usually a result of pain, fear, or a combination of hunger and extreme exhaustion. We actually got this gem last night after bath because she resisted naps all afternoon, so by 8:00 she was exhausted, hungry, and coming down from her bath high... bad combo.
  • My lo generally has the same - some fussy crying which is more boredom or being tired, and YOU'D BETTER GET ME WHAT I WANT RIGHT NOW, DAMMIT!  The latter can be for extreme sleepiness or for hunger.  And, she can be not hungry, and then to the frantic screaming tears point hunger in under 5 minutes.  Other than that, I really don't see a big difference in the sound of the cry.
