Breastfeeding...

I had my son at 33 weeks & he finally got to come home from the NICU on Friday. I have been pumping this whole time & I get him to latch. I know I have a really good supply going but I feel he doesn't get enough when he latches rather than eating it through a bottle. When I have him latch he is on for about 15-20 min. & when I pump.. I pump for 15 min & receive about 4-8ounces give or take. When I feed him through a bottle he will wake up about 2 1/2 hours later to eat again but when I get him to latch he wakes up about 1 1/2 hours later wanting to eat again... Any mom's gone through this? Advise?

Re: Breastfeeding...

  • I would see a LC or go to LLL meeting and do a weighed feeding. Your pedi office may be able to do one as well. Do you hear him swallowing?

  • I agree with PP. I had preemie twins and it can take longer for them to nurse and empty a breast. A weighted feed will tell you the most about how effective of a nurser LO is. In the beginning, mine would nurse for a half hour and get only 10mL! I kept them practice nursing after bottles until their weighted feeds were high enough that I was confident they could nurse exclusively.

  • Ya I hear, feel,&watch him suck & swallow. He gets to the point where he is "milk drunk" (asleep with his mouth still open with milk all around his lips) so I know he is getting milk. But I will call my lacatation. Thanks
  • It sounds like he is getting milk which is great! The thing I learned with preemies (from my LC) is that once they've expelled a lot of energy BF, their reflex is to fall asleep since they can't finish. If you do a weighted feed and he's getting a whole feed, then you gave confidence he's just milk drunk but if he's not getting enough and finishing his feeds, then that would explain him going back for feeds more frequently. Good for you being persistent with BF. I know how much work it takes!
