High-Risk Pregnancy

Extremely early cervical funneling. 13 & 14 weeks

11 years ago I had a 19 w loss due to IC and or preterm labor. Upon becoming pregnant again I informed my new Obgyn that I needed a preventative cerclage before 12 weeks as I was told before by my previous Obgyn. This doctor was sure we could wait till 13 weeks and placed my cerclage low on my cervix. I believe now she was inexperienced in high risk and I'm now seeing someone new and a MFM dr. Last week only one week after my cerclage was placed my MFM discovered I had funneled 2/3 of my cervix down to my stitch in just one week. I'm now 14 weeks, she placed me on progesterone pills till I'm 16 w and can start the shots and the procardia plus 100% horizontal bedrest except to use bathroom or shower every other day. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever heard the baby in form this early on to at least viability. My doctor says I have 12 weeks till viability being 26 weeks. They've made it clear that I will not have full term but I guess I'm just looking for some hope. I know how unusual PTL is this early. I'm very scared. I'll stay in this bed forever if it means this baby can live.

Re: Extremely early cervical funneling. 13 & 14 weeks

  • Have you visited the Keep 'M Cookin' site? I find a lot of encouraging success stories there when my cervix first started to shorten.
  • Loading the player...
  • Hey! Yes I have but I didn't see stories. I will go take another peek! Thank you. I hope your cervix is holding up!
  • It is! It actually got longer, then shorter again, that's when they put me on bed rest and progesterone (suppisitories). I found that site a little confusing, too and nowhere near as active members.
  • Oh wow I didn't know it can get longer again!!! How far along are you and we're you when shortening began? Did you get a cerclage?!
  • Yep! I knew that I had a short cervix because I had an aggressive LEEP in '05. It went from 2.9 at 11 weeks all of the way up to 3.4 before it started shortening again. I did not have a cerclage, but I begged for one! My doctor thought that it could do more harm than good by irritating my uterus so she wouldn't give me one. I was really nervous, but she did put me on bed rest and progesterone suppisitories twice a day and she was right! I'm 37 weeks tomorrow. Got off of progesterone a couple of weeks ago, but still being a couch potato.
  • Without a cerclage, and just taking Prometrium 2x per night since about 14 weeks, my cervix has stayed between 3.7cm to over 4cm. Because of the length and how the Prometrium seemed to be working, they didn't feel a cerclage necessary. I had a loss 1 year ago at 17 weeks and they're unsure why it happened; my water broke at home.
I'm also on bed rest (a modified rest, I can get out for a bit each day but I'm off work) and have had regular u/s to measure cervix length. I'm almost 26 weeks now.

A good friend of mine started funneling and dilating at to 3cm 20 weeks. The risk for a cerclage at that point were too high so she was given Prometrium and on strict bed rest...she delivered at 39+3 just last month. She's convinced the Prometrium and bed rest combo are the only reason she has her daughter today.

Good luck to you. Bed rest is hard, but worth it!
  • I have an IC too. I got a cerclage at 15 weeks with a cervix length at 30mm. I started to funneled at 17 weeks (cervix went down to 17mm) and baby was sitting on the stitch. Then I bedrest for 4 weeks to see if my cervix would change and it did! At 21 weeks my cervix was 26mm and just a little funneled. I did modified bedrest for week 21 to 23 and it went down to 20mm!! I think bedrest and progesterone really help. I am now 24 weeks today and tomorrow I am receiving steroids injection for the baby lungs just in case. They will measure my cervix again.

Cerclage are pretty amazing! I hope I can get to at least 32 weeks!

Good luck to you and try not to move or lift anything. I'm getting crazy at home but it's worth it:)
  • These stories are so incredibly inspiring. I've been so scared. I saw the MFM dr today she said there no change in my cervix since last week which is good. I start my progesterone shots next week.
  • Ps. I don't know how many cm or mm my cervix has left. My dr always speaks in inches. She said I have half an inch left. That I've funneled 2/3??
  • Inches are better! I found a lot of helpful information on the benefits of progesterone and pre-term labor on the March of Dimes website, too.
  • Just found out yesterday at 21w 3days, that my cervix is funneling and she called it dynamic cervix or something like that. But my Midwife says that cervix thength is still good, she didn't give a number but took me off work and no lifting, exercise, sex, or walking for long periods of time for 2 weeks the we go back. I'm trying to take it easy and stay laying down as much as possible, but honestly every little pain I feel is making me more worried even when before I had these pains I thought nothing of them bc I just figured it's normal growing and stretching of the uterus. I don't know how you ladies who are worse off than I am are handling this bed rest for weeks at a time! I'm trying not to get too worried but I was so excited and working on babies room and now I feel like I caused this and that I shouldn't be excited anymore and just keep praying my baby girl will be okay. She didn't mention anything about high risk or needing to see a specialist but it's concerning bc a lot of you ladies with the same diagnosis got sent to see a specialist!
  • I would see a specialist even if it's just for a one time evaluation. They just have more experience in anything out of a routine pregnancy.
  • I've been on modified bedrest for 5 weeks and strict bedrest for almost 3. It's hard. There no doubt about that. I'm only 15 weeks, so I have a long long way to go. God willing. I just try to take it one day at a time and not think too far ahead. It can be depressing to think that this is our first pregnancy and I'm hidden away. I won't be able to shop for baby or decorate the room of even have a shower. (I guess I could if I lay down during it lol) All those thoughts can become overwhelming. Just rest and think good thoughts.
  • Hmm... Ok. It must be how rapidly it funneled that's giving her such concern. I have constant pressure and twinge every few seconds on my cervix. I asked is that's normal and she just said to move my progesterone and procardia to every 5 hours. I'm anxious to start the shots on Tuesday! I hope they work better than the pills!
