Callouses on nipples with breastfeeding

So dd2 is 5 days old. We have been ebf and she has had an occasional syrgine feed. Whenever she is evaluated by a medical staff member (LC or her pedi) she latches fantastic. I would say 85-90% of the time. The rest of the time she had killed my nipples to the point where there are small callouses on the tips (left is worse) I have still been nursing her and occasionally pumping. When I was engoerged day 3 she had a lot of trouble latching. I noticed the milk doesn't come out at the calloused areas. She nurses at least the recommended amount per day and pulls off the breast appearing satisfied until a few hours ago. I feel like she is also using me as pacifier at times. Is she really this hungry right now or does she just like to suck. If any one has had calloused nipples what happens after they get soft again? Many help or insight appreciated.

Re: Callouses on nipples with breastfeeding

  • My LC told me to use bacitracin (sp?) because she said you want to keep them moist, to heal. I did for 2 days and they are already better! Healed and no longer painful! Good luck!

  • yes, I struggle with initial latch (have had issues with each of my kiddos)  I first cracked and bled and now just have some callouses.  I keep Lanolin on them frequently and this keeps them soft and diminishes pain.  i also got a nipple shield and will let her latch with it for the first minute or two, then remove it.  this has helped pain decrease immensly and allowed my nipples to heal.  good luck momma, bfing is hard work!
