"Labor" Day GTKY: What music do you want to listen to during "Labor"?

LOL, sorry. I had to.

Now, I know a lot of FTM and 2nd, 3rd, etc time Moms out there might not even listen to music or may think it's stupid. (I have NO idea if I'll do it for sure or not) BUT, my fiance is a musician and has continuously asked "what do I want to listen to" (I think I should start asking HIM what does HE want to listen to haha.)

Anyways, this is so weird but I think if I could pick something, it would be Bob Marley's greatest hits. I used to listen to that down at the beach growing up. It was the music they played on repeat at the snack bar and it truly takes me back to a very "chill" and "carefree" time. I would literally never listen to that any other time, but for some reason it sounds magical during labor.

  • I second Bob Marley, as well as Indian ragas for putting me in a meditation mindset. HOWEVER, when I was a runner, punk was the music that motivated me, so I might throw some Bad Brains in the mix.

  • I love this topic! I'm a FTM and think music makes everything better. I'm still putting my playlist together (and I have very eclectic tastes) but a few artists are: DMB, U2, James Morrison, Frank Sinatra, Bob Marley, Jason Mraz, BB King, Beyoncé, Beatles, Dixie Chicks, Johnny Cash, Bleachers, Elton John, Billy Joel, Dean Martin, Gladys Knight, Brandi Carlile, David Gray, Faith Hill, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, John Mayer, Marvin Gaye, Macklemore, John Hiatt, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, MB 20, Tristan Prettyman.

I missed a few artists and am looking for more so can't waist to hear what others are listening to!
  • With my first son I listened to waves crashing onto a beach. I tuned it out, so it didn't really help.
This time if i can, I wanna listen to Bon jovi and journey.
  • As much as I love music and it's a huge part of my life, I'm not the type to bring a "labor playlist" into the delivery room...if I decide I want music, I'll turn Spotify on my phone and listen to whatever I'm in the mood for at that moment. I plan on doing epidural and any other pain meds they offer me though, so it will be more of a boredom-killer than anything else.

  • I had a c/s the first time and the doctors let us play my Pandora in the OR. Really helped me relax given the environment. We listened to my Beach Boys/oldies station. Every time I hear the song "Build Me Up Buttercup" I think about DD - that's what was playing when she was born.
I'm definitely planning to have music again.

As long as I can get access to wifi, I'll put on a playlist on songza or something. Hah!

  • I had a very planned out playlist full of soft things like Bon Iver and Avett Brothers. When it came down to it, I actually screamed at my husband to f******* shut it off! I need silence during birth, and as a music lover, that really surprised me.
  • I'm having a home birth so I've been thinking about it lately. I have a long worship playlist that's mostly relaxing that I think I'll listen to. And then I have other songs that are softer from my regular playlists on spotify. I'm hoping it helps me to relax. If not I'll probably just forget about it lol
  • @holocene oh Bon iver will definitely be on that playlist.
  • I found that I couldn't care less what was on. The morning news was on with my son which I usually hate but I was so in my own world I didn't even notice it.
  • I didn't have a set playlist for my first, and I didn't miss it. I actually got very annoyed with any extra sounds (including people counting and telling me to breath), so I doubt I'll be any different this time. Like other people have said, if I want something I'll probably just put on Spotify or something similar.

  • Oh god, I didn't even know this was a thing. I imagine our playlist will have a lot of Mother Mother.
  • I'm not a big music person. With my first I watched the Winter Olympics on a loop all night long until it came time to push. I just told my husband to put a pandora station on, most likely it was classic rock. I couldn't tell you one song that played, but I didn't want pure silence either. I think pretty much anything that you like will do.
  • My husband said hes making a playlist so im just letting him. He does this for things like roadteips, vacations, parties, etc. He said it has music and songs that are from our adventures. No harm if we dont "use" it. He likes the process and makes him feel involved.
  • None probably. I get kind of grumpy in pain and when I'm uncomfortable. Plus when DH gets nervous he doesn't stop talking so I can't handle too much noise. I might have music at some point, but it'll just be a random Pandora station I have. Other than that, probably no music.

  • I didn't have any music on when laboring with DD because I basically was walking around the halls of the hospital the whole time until I was allowed to push. I wanted to still be able to talk to DH, my MIL, and my mom so I didn't want headphones. If I did have music playing, it'd probably have been Pictures at an Exhibition my Mussorgsky. The entire piece just calms me and takes me somewhere magical, every. Freaking. Time. Love.

My old roommate is the drummer for Tristan Prettyman :) Fun mix!
  • I love this topic! Hooray! My husband is a pianist, and I come from a musical theatre background, so our baby is already getting a barrage in-utero!
I plan to have several lists prepared on Spotify--depending on my mood. I will likely have a list of praise songs mixed with soft music, but also will probably have to have something like a list of showtunes so I can sing along when I'm bored.

Finally, I saw a video recently of a woman who danced between contractions. I LOVE dancing. I mean, I really LOVE it. So, I am thinking I'll have something like a list of songs by the Temptations and other Motown artists that are really easy to dance to. Just in case I need to shake a leg. :)
