OB and ultrasound Dr telling me different dates

So my original due date was Sept 27. I had issues with fluid around my kidney I believe it was so I had frequent ultrasounds to make sure it was going away on its own (it did thank god!) And while at my 2nd last ultrasound (end of May) the ladies at the hospital told me I was measuring bigger than my due date worked out to be and moved my due date to Sept 17. Since then I've had one other ultrasound appointment (July 22) and it was the same ladies. I specifically asked them if there was any change in the due date and they said absolutely not everything was measuring the same and the due date is the 17. So then this past Thursday I had my bi weekly appt with my OB at her office and the nurse said "since you're 36 weeks today we will have you do swabs." 36 weeks?! No way. I asked the dr as soon as she came in what was going on as that would make me due in OCTOBER which is a huge difference. She then told me my due date was Sept 28 and how that's the most assurate. I told her the ultrasound drs gave me a due date of the 17th and she said "well the level 7 doctors have a date here of the 28 and they're 'gods' so we're going to go with that date." My due date was never even the 28th it was the 27th to start with!!! Then when they realized my baby was bigger they made it sound like a huge deal. They were like wow he's definitely farther along than we thought. Now my OB is telling me I'm due even later than my ORIGINAL date, let alone my most recent date. Who do I believe here?

Re: OB and ultrasound Dr telling me different dates

  • Early (first tri) ultrasounds are the most reliable as far as EDDs go, and there is only a day difference between the 27th and the 28th so I'd go with that. I had two early u/s, one at my regular OB (EDD 9/2) and a level 2 u/s at the MFM (EDD 8/27). LO #4 was born 8/28. I had measured 2+ weeks ahead of that at later u/s but that just meant that LO was bigger than average (weighed 8lbs 10oz at birth).

  • Just because your baby is measuring bigger doesn't mean the date of conception change, which is how due dates are calculated. Just means your baby grew faster or more. .plus ultrasound measurements can be unreliable, your baby might be an average size. Like PP said, the early ultrasounds are the most reliable for dating. Late ultrasounds have so much more variability. It's definitely confusing but I think your ob is right!
  • I'm in a similar boat - I had three early ultrasounds, one said 9/2, one said 9/8, and one said 9/9. I've been telling people 9/2 (because initially I thought this was the date we were going with), but she's going by 9/9. Those dates aren't as far apart as yours, but it's still a little frustrating because it will affect when I get induced, if we get to that point. I'm just hoping baby comes this week and then I don't have to worry about it!
  • I have "two dates" as well. September 28th based off of lmp and October 5th based off of first ultrasound at 6 weeks 2 days...
He was measuring for sept 28th and now he is not apparently.
And I've been seeing two midwives (vacation for original) and they didn't officially decide between themselves his due date until 2 weeks ago so this whole time I've been going by Sept. And now I'm October. *sigh*
It could be an issue because of induction possibilities which I want to avoid at all costs...
But who knows! He could come whenever he darn pleases.
So I'm just going to keep calm and carry on. /pretend this doesn't drive me mental.
  • Unless you have a medical issue that means risk if he stays in there too long I would try to let go of the dates and just accept that he'll most likely come on his own in the latter half of the month sometime. Gestation really is a range not an exact science anyway, and late term u/s can be way off on size estimates. I know it's frustrating, but babies have their own plan and we just have to go with it. Doctor's are great for many things, but they're not infallible. Let your body and baby take care of the date for you!
