Re: c - section Stories? Emergency Vs Scheduled. Overall experience?

  • I had an emergency C-section 3 weeks ago. After pushing for 5 hours and 3 failed attempts at vacuum suction, my dr. said it was time for the c-section.I was so scared, I started crying (exhaustion + hormones = bawling) Once I got into the surgery room, the whole process took like 15-20 minutes and my son was finally out!! I was scared for nothing :) The hospital in my town does not allow vbacs so I will have to have a c-section for the next one, and even if I did have the option - I would pick c-section. No more 5 hours of pushing!

  • After 20 hours of painful labor, I was not dilating past 9 1/2 so I had to have a c section. It took around 30 minutes. I was so drugged it was kind of a blur. All I really remember is feeling pressure when the baby was removed, hearing his cries and seeing him for the first time. The next day when it was time to get out of bed it really hurt and it was hard to walk. Everyday it gets easier though. The belly binder the hospital gave me has helped a lot. Good luck!
  • I've had an emergency and 2 scheduled c-sections. The scheduled ones are so much nicer than the emergency! I was more peaceful and present, baby got to do skin on skin right away and start nursing in recovery with me, recovery and emotions were better. Overall a much better experience. Best of luck to you!!
  • I've had one emergency and one scheduled csection. My recovery from the scheduled one has been SO much better. Not sure if it's because i knew what to expect or bc it was scheduled but it's been much easier, even with a toddler to take care of.
  • I've also had one emergency and one scheduled. The recovery has been much better for this one (the scheduled) whether it's because i was more prepared for it or if it was because my body didn't go through labor first. I delivered on Friday, was discharged Monday and today (Tuesday) i cleaned the bathroom, went to Walmart and drove myself to an appointment. None of those activities are probably "permitted" or even wise but it speaks to how much easier this recovery has been. Good luck mama!
  • I'll be 38 weeks tomorrow and my baby is fully breech. The doctors office called me today to let me know that the doctor would be taking to me tomorrow about a c section since it is unlikely baby is going to flip at this point. Pretty nervous about recovery too!
  • I went through 14 hours of labor at 4cm dilated and with max pitocin drip with no progress. I ended up with a c-section. I'm sure had it been scheduled I would have had a different experience but I was pretty distraught about it. The doctor came in and checked my cervix at about 7:00pm, said I had not progressed and that we were going to have to do a c-section. I immediately started crying and didn't stop until after the surgery was over. I really didn't feel like I had time to process what was happening before they were wheeling me down the hall. My husband was close by but when we got to the OR he had the stay in the hall while they prepped me which made me cry more and cry harder. The nurse and anesthesiologist were both wonderful and tried to comfort me but there was honestly nothing that could calm me at that point. When they did let my husband in I felt a little better. I didn't expect it to feel the way it did. I know they said I would feel pressure and maybe it was just in my head but all the tugging that I did feel scared me and made me cry more. My son was out at 7:40PM and they stitched me up which was a really short process. My husband held him close to me after they got him cleaned up and once they were done with me I got to do skin to skin and kept him on me while they wheeled me back to my recovery room. It was not a positive experience for me but like I said I think it would have been different if it were scheduled or if I had more time to prepare. My son was born on Wednesday evening and I was released from the hospital on Friday evening.

  • I'm a FTM so I've only had one..emergency csection. The worst part for me is the spinal tap made me nauseous and I vomited quite a bit which was horrible laying completely on my back and not being able to sit up.. They just had me turn my head to the side and caught it in a bowl. After I got to do a few minutes of skin to skin(which was also interrupted because I got sick again) my husband took baby to the nursery so they gave me some IV drugs to knock me out while they sewed me up
  • I'm a ftm and I had a scheduled c section because baby was breech and didn't have enough fluid to flip him. The experience was very strange, but not painful. Before the spinal block I asked for nausea medicine and it kept me from dry heaving during the procedure (something I was very afraid of). For the spinal block I just felt pressure and while they got baby out I just felt odd tugging sensations. I immediately got to see baby over the sheet and my husband brought him around right after cutting the cord. The longest parts were waiting for my husband to join me in the OR and then when he left after to be with baby and I was still getting sewn up. Recovery has been much better than expected. As long as I stay ahead of the pain with medication everything has been manageable.
