Shiny Floaties in your Vision *UPDATE*

Ok so I searched but could not find a whole lot of discussion on this. Anyone else pretty far along that has randomly seen what looks like shiny clear worms floating across their vision? I already called the dr. and they want me to come in today for a blood pressure and urine check just in case. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this, if so did it turn out to be anything? I'm 36 weeks along with my 3rd baby and have never had any blood pressure issues, but better safe than sorry.

Re: Shiny Floaties in your Vision *UPDATE*

  • Usually its a sign of high blood pressure. I have recently had visual stars or interrupted vision. Usually I have my DH check my blood pressure anytime he's home and I experience them but everything has been fine at home and at office. I'm in my 34th week and according to the Bump, hormones can be affecting your vision. Good luck to you!!

  • I think it is a potential sign of pre-e. Good that you are going in!
  • I had some "floaters" right before I had DS. It's one possible sign of pre-e, which is why they'll want to check your BP and urine. Good luck!

  • My doctor always told me that seeing dark spots was a high blood pressure sign. I occasionally experience seeing "stars" or white lights, especially when I'm in the shower. But it doesn't seem to have anything to do with my BP.

  • I had something similar ~24 wks and went to see my optometrist. He said it wasn't related to the pregnancy, and I can't remember what it was. Basically, it can happen to your eyes as you age and is normal. He said to watch out for seeing things like a 'shower of sparks' or 'fireworks', as that could be a sign of a detached retina, which requires medical attention asap.

So my problem didn't have anything to do with pre-e, but you should get yourself checked out anyway. Better safe than sorry. Good luck.
  • I've heard that it can be a sign of pre-e or blood pressure issues, but I've had them off and on for weeks now and my urine and bp have been fine at my doctor appts and when. I check my bp at home, so I have no.idea what they're from.
  • Of course call your doctor but I get them from time to time (shiny/silver little spots that move kinda like worms just out of my direct line of sight) and I have had no issues with my blood pressure so far and I'm 36w5d.
  • I had them with my first and it turned out to be my blood pressure. Good luck!
  • stars or white light squirmies are what I see when my bp is very low (I have fainted multiple times in my life due to low bp and/or low blood sugar).

  • I've had them as well and my Dr wasn't concerned. If my vision was blurry, that she said she'd be concerned about. It sounds like lots of different experiences. Hope it turns out to be nothing!
  • It could also be a sign of low blood sugar or dehydration. Let us know how your appointment goes.
  • Ive had them before but usually only when i take out or put my contacts in. So far blood pressure has been normal during this pregnancy and i'm 36w4days.
  • I've been "seeing stars" too! Usually If I stand up too fast, or if I get very hot....
  • I see spots, sparkles, and bubbles. I normally feel very off when this happens. I take my BP regularly though I don't always have my cuff when this happens. My DR knows this happens but because my BP is typically at the highest 110/60, she's not concerned about it. I always call my DR when this happens even though she always says it is nothing. I'd rather be safe than sorry and think you are making the right call!

Thank you everyone for your responses I did go to the dr and the whole thing turned into a mess from there. BP was 148/78 and they said they found small amts of blood, protein, and white blood cells in my urine. She said not to freak out I may have pre-e, hypertension, or a UTI. They sent me to L&D for testing and to monitor baby. I'm a pretty patient person and I know how hospitals can be (baby #3 here), I by no means believe myself to be an urgent priority to the doctors. That being said I do expect to be treated like a person, such as introduce yourself before you grope me, I am a TTM but these complications are new to me and the scatter brained resident I had left me feeling worse than when I arrived at the hospital. She flitted in and out several times rambling, she didn't read my history and laughed it off when I told her this was my 3rd pregnancy not first and said oh I didn't see that (my chart is right in front of her). She asked why I thought that I needed to come in, uh I didn't my dr did bc of my high blood pressure and UA results. Well 3 hrs later after being ignored for over an hr with no idea what is going on she comes back and says your BP has gone down and your urine has no protein so you get to go home do a 24 hr urine catch and follow up with your dr. Ok so what about blood and white blood cells, do I have a UTI? Her response oh I didn't see that but I will check...um kinda why I'm here remember? Then a new nurse comes in to "admit" me, I tell her the resident just said I'm going home. She looks at me like I'm an idiot said resident comes back and they talk in front of me and laugh about how resident meant send me home to do the urine catch not admit LOL. Um no not LOL YOUR A BUNCH OF IDIOTS!!! Of course I don't say that but if they would have retaken my BP at this time it would be back up I'm sure. Resident says yup urine is clean your being released. DH and I left crazy town to get our kids and go home, I was miserable, given no answers after being poked and prodded. The residents explanation on the urine was maybe my dr office urine strip test was inaccurate the nurse suggested maybe dr office switched my urine with someone else's. Yup sure I bet they are the ones who screwed something up...so less than 4 weeks until delivery and even though I have had two babies at this hospital seriously considering switching. Sorry for the super long update.
  • That sounds ridiculous.  I would be so upset with them.  I hope it turns out to be nothing and baby can stay put for a little while longer.
  • Wow @junglebaby11! I would defiantly talk to your doctor about switching!
  • I'm sorry you had to deal with that. Next time (although I hope this doesn't happen again for you), ask to speak with the senior resident. Sounds like you were dealing with an intern that should know better but has only been out of medical school 3-4 months. Hope you and baby do well! :)
  • @junglebaby11 - So sorry to hear about that! Are you still doing the urine catch and/or do you have a blood pressure cuff? Those things should give you peace of mind and are unlikely to fall into the hands of that intern. :P
  • @TheSouffleGirl I am supposed to start urine catch this morning. DH set up a cooler full of ice in bathroom for me bc it has to stay chilled and he said under no circumstances am I allowed to put my pee jug in the fridge:) i was really enjoying myself this morning by teasing him that I could use the almost empty orange juice jug and there's a perfect spot in the fridge for it. He was seriously grossed out. I don't have a BP cuff but if I start showing symptoms of high BP I'm supposed to go in. I'm going to call nurse when the open to tell them about hospital experience and I have an appt with my OB tomorrow. So I'm just trying to not worry & enjoy the day off work while I collect all of my pee:)

If it makes you feel any better, I did all of this (spots in vision, initial hbp at appointments, etc) and my collection and samples came back clean. :). Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
  • @TheSouffleGirl honestly I'm more paranoid about it being a UTI than pre-e or hypertension just bc I have had UTI's before. Which is easily treated I just need a diagnosis and the correct meds. I'm drinking only water and just a little 100% cranberry juice just in case. Guess we will just wait and see:)
  • @junglebaby11,

Thoughts and prayers for you. Hopefully everything comes out clean or at least you get the correct diagnosis. Your experience in the hospital sounds extremely frustrating!

  • Hers's another update 24 hour urine catch came back with good results so no diagnoses of pre-e or hypertension just yet YEA!!! They want to do twice weekly appointments for BP and UA checks plus my regular weekly appointment but I'm glad that they want to keep such a close eye on it. That definitely helps with my worrying about it. Had my first quick check this morning they want me to up my iron intake even more, bp was 128/78 so not bad, and I was in and out in 35 minutes. I can handle that:) Did find out I'm GBS+ which sucks but wasn't really a suprise considering my other 2 were. Thank you all for your advice and prayers, hope you all have a great day!!
