2nd Trimester

Sciatica

I had sciatica with my first pregnancy and I'm almost 24 weeks now with baby 2. This time it's even worse. I sleep with a pregnancy pillow and try stretching. I spent several hundreds of dollars at the chiropractor last time and got zero relief from it and don't want to do that again this time. Any other suggestions or thing you ladies have found that help?

I don't have relief for you, just wanted you to know that you are not alone!! Mine is terrible. :( if you do discover something please share!!!
  • I was experiencing this during my 1st tri and my doctor suggested to sleep on the side that's bothering you so that way the muscle isn't being pulled. I've been doing it for about 10 weeks now and the only time I have issues with my sciatica flaring up is when I fall asleep on my stomach or my other side. Whenever I sleep on my left side (the bothersome side), I have zero problems.
  • Try finding a Chiropractor. ICPA4kids.org is a great resource to find one in your area.
  • Has anyone tried yoga? I'm thinking it might help me but haven't found a good place to go yet
  • My dr told me that I could take ibuprofen in the second trimester only. Haven't tried that yet. But she said to google pregnancy sciatica stretches and not to sit at a 90 degree angle that will make it much worse! She also said I could definately use a heating pad
  • I've been having horrible Sciatica pain! I've found that a heating pad and daily stretches provide some relief.  I just googled stretches for sciatica relief and found some good ones.  I also LOVE doing a few minutes of yoga in the morning and evening.  I found this lady who has 10 minute sessions for prenatal, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B87FpWtkIKA, and it's helped a lot too.
  • Ditto! I used heat on my lower back and that seemed to help.
  • Some days are worse than others, but it is always there.  I agree with PP's that certain positions and stretches you can do help, but I can never get mine to fully go away.

With my first pregnancy, it didn't start until later in the pregnancy.  2nd time around, it was sooner-in the 1st trimester.  With my 3rd, I actually noticed the back pain before I even knew I was pregnant!!  I remember thinking "Hmm, my back has only done that when I'm pregnant...maybe I need to go to the doctor and have my back checked..."

Mine typically doesn't go away 'til after delivery.

  • Foam roller has helped me. Give it a try. It's cheap on Amazon. This video shows you how to do the exercise on it. https://youtu.be/V7SZvHO4y6o
  • I know that with mine my list of ok medicine was bengay and I used that before bed and it seemed to help! Check with your ob first though!
  • I started having sciatica/SI joint pain around 9 weeks. But i've found as long as I keep up with my workout routine, which includes squats, deadlifts and lunges and keep those muscles strong it stays away.

  • Walking helps, which seems counter intuitive. But it does help stretch out and strengthen those muscles. Also try prenatal massage. It helped me a lot with my first pregnancy.

  • I went to acupuncture last Saturday and feel 90% better. Check with your dr 1st and make sure the acupuncturist has worked on pregnant women. Ive had back issues for a awhile now and that is my only relief
