Breast pump question

I just ordered my breast pump through the insurance (medala in style advance) l. It didn't come with a cooler and other accessories. What else do you recommend buying? What about bottles? I'm being induced for medical reasons in less than 4 weeks (unless she decides to show up sooner) and I am starting to freak.

Thanks!

Re: Breast pump question

  • Good to know. I just ordered the same one. & was curious about what it all comes with. I already bought a bunch of bottles & storage containers.

  • You can buy the cooler and accessories, but why are you freaking? Even if she shows up early, you really don't need the pump right away. Unless there are medical issues, you really shouldn't pump for at least 4 weeks, until BFing is well established. You won't need the cooler or accessories until you go back to work.

Even still, those things can be picked up at Target or ordered at Amazon.

    Don't stress.
  • When they sent mine (same pump)  I got a separate shipment of like 8 or so bottles so before buying a bunch wait a week or so and see I you get any. It didn't say anything about it getting or sending them so maybe you both will be surprised too!

  • Additional items you may need are the breast flanges, if the size they send doesn't fit. With my last baby I had 4 sets of flanges. I also froze most of my milk so the amount of bottles needed were about 10, 8 for the flanges and 2 for the fridge storage.
When I was done pumping, I would put the milk in the freezer. I would then put the flanges and bottles back in the fridge so i wouldn't have to keep washing everything. At the end of the day I would wash the bottles and flanges, or just bring out the clean ones and wash them later.
Once I started working, I had a soft lunch box with icepacks, to keep the milk chilled until I got home.
  • I wouldn't start freaking out bc like one of the PP's mentioned most lactation specialist do not recommend you pump right from the start. You need to give baby time to develop their latch before you try to introduce them to the bottle or you will give him/her nipple confusion. If you can't breastfeed immediately for medical reasons they have syringes with tubes the hospital will give you so as to not have to introduce the bottle too early. If you have decided to exclusively pump than I guess you would need the bottles immediately but honestly only a few bc you don't know what type of bottle your baby will like. If you are talking about specifically buying the medella storage bottles I personally never spent the money on them. I found it way more convenient and more space saving to pump, store in medella or lansinoh bags and label the milk. You can store them in the fridge or flat in the freezer. They have a really good seal and I never had one bust open when I put them into my mini cooler while on the go. I know that with both of my first two babies the hospital gave me a similac moms bag and it included a mini cooler with two ice packs. So you may ask your hospital if they do that before you spend the money. Good Luck!!
  • Thank you for all the responses. I was thinking more about storage and such. I should have made my post clear. I am really anxious about everything right now. I have an ultrasound tomorrow and they might tell me they are going to induce me in 10 days. I can't wait to meet my baby girl, but I'm so nervous at the same time. I just want to have everything as ready as I can. I know I can Easily buy things after baby is born. But I keep feeling so unprepared. I'm guessing is normal for being a FTM.
  • I would recommend having some bottles. A cooler bag is helpful also. Check to see if your dollar store sells the ice packs (assuming those exist where you live lol). I also suggest the little bags to freeze your milk in. I recommend getting the ones that are like a ziplock at the top- much easier. The target brand works just as well as any other -and is cheaper. You may also want to get some nursing pads, when your milk comes in it can be like the flood gates opened!
I totally understand wanting to be prepared. Just know that everything will be okay. Deep breaths okay?
