Hypothyroidism question for STM

Hi ladies. I searched on here but didn't find what I was wanting to know so I hope you guys can help. So I have hypothyroidism for a while now and have been on meds to keep it in line. Since I have gotten pregnant my levels have been all out of whack. My doctor has changed my dosages a couple of time now. Well the question I have is I read that it can cause brain development issues and cause lower IQ and possibly having to be held back in school. Any STMs out there had hypothyroidism with previous children and experience any developmental issues with their children? I am taking my meds and just concerned bc it's not leveling out right that it may cause issues and I want my baby to have the same opportunities as others and don't want my thyroid to cause him any issues.

I'm a FTM, so I don't have any previous experience, but I'm having the same problem. I'm really worried about it, despite my doctor's reassurances

Hi ladies, I'm a FTM as well, but I have hashimoto's thyroiditis, where my thyroid levels are all crazy, all the time. :)  I see a specialist (endocrinologist) in addition to my OB, and they have both reassured me very strongly that as long as you're being monitored by a doctor and they are adjusting your levels once they're out of whack, you and the baby should be totally fine.  The real risk is not being diagnosed with the problem and having your thyroid run rampant without your knowledge.  Undiagnosed thyroid issues can cause all sorts of problems, including miscarriage, but doctors should be able to safely monitor and adjust the ups and downs of your thyroid if they know about your condition, without any negative impact on the baby.

Also, if this further reassures you, the thyroid needs of baby level off toward the end of the second trimester.  Even though my autoimmune disease means my thyroid is all wacky, I don't even have to have my blood tested once in third trimester, as long as I take my meds as normal every day and I'm not exhibiting symptoms.

I know it's hard not to worry, but just talk keep talking to your doctors and everything should be totally fine.
  • FTM myself and I agree with @maureenmce. I also have Hashimoto's and was reassured by both my endo and obgyn that all would turn out alright. Your levels are going to fluctuate during pregnancy regardless. Being monitored and taking meds as prescribed are most important.

  • That is really good to know. I'm really trying not to worry about too much while pregnant and just want to try to enjoy it. I'm happy to hear that my thyroid doesn't really effect the baby much in the 3rd trimester bc I did not know this. Just like everyone else I just want to have a healthy baby and I would be devastated if something went wrong bc of what I have done. It sounds like as long as I continue to take my meds and keep getting checked I should be fine.
  • I started on thyroid medication with my first son and my level stayed consistent throughout pregnancy and after on a very low dose when I got pregnant with my second son my levels were up and down a little and they had to raise my does slightly but it has stayed consistent. my first son is six and a half and my second is two and a half pregnant with my third still on the same dosage.
  • I am a third time mom who had a hypothyroid during my second pregnancy. I was also concerned because it was not caught until I was 12 weeks and I had been losing hair, tired, very depressed for weeks. I had read that the effects are worse in those first weeks too. My son is perfectly healthy and very smart.
  • STM and I had the same problem for DD and now again. Our daughter is perfect ( ;-) ) so I'm confident, our little guy will be too ! Check regulaly with your doctor and try not to worry! :-)
  • I'm a FTM and have hypothroidism as well. I'm glad you started a thread, I posted in the daily symptoms a few times and got nothing. It definitely makes me nervous, but I appreciate your thread and the other ladies advice!
  • Hi
I'm a STM and my levels had to be adjusted my entire first pregnancy and the same so far with this one. My DS is 18 months old and has no developmental problems. I worried with my first also!
  • Took 4 months to balance my thyroid with DD (always hypo). She is turning 4 next month and no problems with her development.

  • I have hypothyrodism and I never thought there was a link between the medication and brain development? Well, I've never heard of it, up until now. I had to increase my medication in my first pregnancy, and lowered it after. I would *hope* a doctor would explain any and all risks...

  • Also a FTM with hypothyroidism. My Dr told me the risk was more your body not being able to handle the pregnancy and having increased chance on miscarriage in early pregnancy. My levels where so off that for years I couldn't conceive so it was something they focused on I'm my first tri but now my Dr doesn't seem to think its a problem as long as I'm taking my meds and keeping my levels where they need to be. But I'm not 100% on it effecting the development. Just make sure your taking your medicine :)
