Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What have you found to help the most with swollen fingers and carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy?

Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Unfortunately, not much. I do Epsom salt soaks on my hands to try to pull some of the swelling out, which slightly reduces numb spells. My splints make everything swell more which makes the pain and numbness worse.

  • My chiropractor adjusted my wrists and it has helped me a lot.
  • I had issues with my right wrist, so I switched my mouse to the left (desk job) and that helped tremendously. Also bought an ice pack specifically for the wrist and use it regularly. It doesn't bother me know, fingers crossed it lasts.
  • I crochet for a living, so I suffer so bad with this during pregnancy :( Had it with my first pregnancy, and now this one. I also do Epsom salt soaks. I rotate between cold and hot. That and Tylenol. Not much else you can do.
  • Does anyone know what the chances of suffering permanent nerve damage is? My carpal tunnel is so bad that I have no feeling in 8/10 of my fingers. I can barely grasp things and my fingers don't bend all the way. I'm nervous about permanent damage because my job tasks include, drawing, painting, sewing, etc. My doctors have pretty much blown me off about it. One said to keep your hands elevated as much as possible and to try splints.

  • The nerve path for carpel affects your thumb, index, middle and half of your ring finger. Are you getting absolutely zero periods where you have feeling? If so, then it may be time to visit or demand a referral to an orthopedic. While I know there are injections that can be done, I'm pretty sure they aren't pregnancy friendly. But that would be something an orthopedic could explore with you. I've done everything up to surgery for mine, and my right hand is numb more than I have feeling. My OB thinks it will get better once I deliver and get all the extra fluid out of my body, but I have already called my orthopedic surgeon to give them a heads up that I want on the surgery calendar by end of the year (yay for out of pocket max!) should my OB be wrong on that bet.

My splints also seem to make it worse when I'm sleeping. I started off when them on last night and when I woke up the first time to go to the bathroom my hands seemed worse so I took them off and was able to sleep better. I'm debating not using them during sleeping anymore.
