Infertility

On Cycle Day 123...no AF yet...

Ugh, so, my husband and I went off birth control in April and my last period started on April 29th. However, 4 months later, no pregnancy and worse...no period! We've been working with an OBGYN to find out what's wrong but nothing too out of the ordinary. External and internal ultrasound showed zero abnormalities and same with my bloodwork...except my prolactin which sat at 63. I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 2007, but always had regular periods when I was on BCP.
I'm so confused and more frustrated by not having a period because I feel like I'm failing to do the simple and "normal" woman thing. I am overweight but have no other problems. I'm at a 40.6 BMI and they said I need to get to BMI of below 40 before they will give me clomid...but I still need to have a period! Has anyone else ever dealt with this frustration?

Re: On Cycle Day 123...no AF yet...

  • I have not had to deal with this issue, but it sounds like this could be due to either your PCOS or high prolactin level or both. I hope your doctor is doing follow-up testing on your prolactin and has also tested your TSH and free T4 levels as hypothyroidism can artificially elevate prolactin levels and cause issues with your cycle. Good luck!

  • I've dealt with the frustration of not having a period too. I took my last BCP back in December of 2014. I got a period after that, but after that I had nothing for over a year. January of 2015 I think I had a period, but I'm not sure. Then I got nothing else until April. I had a somewhat regular cycle April, May, June, and July.. then again I went back to not getting anything. I started my medication this cycle, and after this I am sure I will get a period if I don't end up with a BFP.

I don't have PCOS though, I have hypothalamic amenorrhea, so a different thing cause me not to get periods, but just as frustrating!

  • I'm so sorry you are having to go through this ! Not having your period is so frustrating . I have PCOS as well and typically only have 1 or 2 periods a year but have gone through periods of having slightly more or none at all . No rhyme or reason to it that I can tell (and I've tried diets , various ways to manage stress). Hopefully your doc can run some more tests to figure it out ! I'm on ovulation induction drugs now and I will say this is the first time i have felt "normal " even if it is drug induced .

  • I too have PCOS and only have 1 or 2 periods a year if that and I know exactly what you mean about not having a period. The worse things is whenever people say I'm crazy for being mad about not having a period or for inducing one with meds. I have to have a period to get pregnant and they just don't get that...However, my OB/GYN told me that the reason I do not have a regular period is because I am not ovulating. Having your period is when your lining is shedding after you have ovulated and there was no egg to implant. SO since I do not ovulate on my own the lining did not get thick to prepare for pregnancy so there is nothing to shed.....from what I gather. Best of Luck!

  • It can take 3+ months for your body to regulate after BCP.  Most OBs will RX Provera to jumpstart your period after 60-90 days with no bleeding.  Has your OB RX Provera?
  • I have PCOS and my gyno induced periods with progesterone pills.
