what type of bottles will you use?

Things are a little different since I had my first child 13 years ago!

I really don't know what type of bottles to buy! What are good. Which ones are bad. I'm going to start off with nursing, but will also pump. This will be for the first couple of months. Then I may introduce formula later on around 6-8 months.

What Type of bottles did you choose to go with???

Re: what type of bottles will you use?

  • I am using the bottles my sister gave me that she used with both her little ones, Dr. Brown. She BF and pumped, no problems. I'm just buying new nipples and will boil the bottles, then will be good to go :)

  • I started off with an expensive Medela nipple that was $15 bucks a pop. It came highly recommended from an LC, do not waste your money. After that I switched to my Breast Friend by The First Years. I was having trouble nursing and this was supposed to be as close to the real deal as possible. It helped, but the flow was faster than I wanted. At 4 months, I switched to Dr. Browns and used the newborn nipple the whole time DS was on bottles. Ultimately, my two cents is whatever bottle you choose, use the slowest nipple possible so baby doesn't develop bottle preference.
  • There really isn't too much of a difference in bottle brands these days, if you ask me. Your two main options for bottles are glass or plastic. We went with plastic because the glass ones are much heavier, and the plastic used for baby bottles is highly regulated and carries no danger of degradation and release of carcinogens like the old ones used to. I also was worried about having to be careful with anything glass while I was overtired and learning how to be a mom. :)

Honestly I don't know that the bottle itself matters so much as the type of nipple you want. We used the Avent bottles with what I believe are their "natural" line of nipples. They're shaped to feel more like your breast pressing against baby's mouth to be more comfortable for babies who also breastfeed and less likely to collapse. They also have some sort of swirling lines in the actual nipple that are supposed to help with colic somehow (I don't know). DD never had a problem with them, they were easy to clean, and the nipples were made of a very durable rubber/plastic so we actually never ended up having to replace a single one. We got some other bottles as a gift and the nipples continued to collapse on poor DD, regardless of the flow rate- we tried their highest flow rate nipple and it still collapsed, even though she clearly wasn't ready for that flow rate because she nearly choked on how much came out so quickly. Just as a side note: whatever nipples you end up liking, make sure you get them in multiple flow rates if you plan to use them for more than a couple of months. DD outgrew the newborn flow rating at probably around 2 months!

TLDR: glass or plastic for the bottles is really dependent on your preference, the nipple will depend on baby's. Be ready to try a few styles.
  • We used Playtex Vent Aire with our DD and we'll use the same kind this time. The pediatrician recommended either Playex or Dr Browns, we just choose Playtex based on price, as I EP and we went through a lot of bottles between home and daycare.

  • My SIL is using the Playtex Drop Ins. They are very easy. You just drop the little bag type thing into the bottle, mix the formula (or pour in breast milk if already pumped) and go. Then when baby is done eating, you throw the drop in away. Also, we bought her a Dr. Brown bottle because our nephew has colic and my husband had read that they were good for colic. She loves it! She says it seems to help. I'm planning to breastfeed, but we're buying bottles as backup.

  • I honestly used any inexpensive bottles. My first two children did not care. With my third while trying to transfer my milk into bottles she would not use any I bought. I literally went through 5 different brand until I bought avent. She loved the avent bottles/nipples. Only ones she would use. I will mostly buy those again.
  • We used Born Free last time around and will again, only glass this time. Wish we hadn't gotten rid of a the different nipple sizes. :(

Used tommee tippee with our daughter. Planning on using with baby boy. :) I pumped exclusively and it worked great, she was weaned off bottle by her first birthday and was using a sippy cup. Really liked how tommee tippee made the transition easy with their brands of sippy cups.

I've heard these are great for washing, because the mouth is so wide. We've used Avent naturals with both kids with no problems. I used them initially because they were compatible with my breast pump. No complaints.

  • Born free bottles for me
  • Dr Brown glass bottles for breast milk.
  • I will use the playtex drop ins. I used them with my 8 yr old and it's really the only familiar territory I have going into new mommy hood again lol.

  • I used Avent natural. They worked fine and were easy to clean since they didn't have a million parts like the Dr. Browns. Every child likes something different but I would suggest not starting with Dr. Brown bottles because they are expensive and trickier to clean due to all the parts. Then if the baby needs a bottle like Dr. Browns you can always get some. I would suggest keeping receipts and only opening a package of two until you know if your child likes them or not.
  • We used Dr. Browns and loved them. We will buy new nipples and use them again this time around as well. Dr. Browns bottles have a special valve that allows the the air bubbles to travel to the bottle of the bottle directly without disturbing the milk. This is important for breastmilk because any disturbances sucks as air bubbles or shaking the milk can breakdown some of the nutrients in the milk.

I highly recommend Kellymom.com to any Moms thinking about bf'ing. There is a lot of info and advice on the sight. Anything from just starting out to relieving mastitis. Here is an article on bottle feeding the breastfed baby. https://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/feeding-tools/bottle-feeding/
We used preemie nipples until 6 months and Level 1 nipples after. I also used preemie nipples when someone who wasn't good at or familiar with paced feedings (ie MIL) was feeding him.
  • Dr. Brown. We used them last time and I loved them. Cleaning the parts never bothered me.
  • Dr. Brown! DD wouldn't take any other kind!
  • We used Tommee tippee last time. I'm looking into glass this time and still trying to narrow it down. Leaning towards either the Avent or Tommee tippee again.
  • We used a mix of the medelas that came with my punp and Born Free last time and I loved them, but I'm going with glass Born Free ones this time. Breast milk is somewhat oily and even after scrubbing and sanitizing I never felt like I could get them truly clean and they would get dingy over time.
  • @WineBaby122 I had the same problem with even the plastic parts to my glass Dr. Browns. I highly recommend Palmolive Baby dish soap. If the pieces are cleaned well it totally gets the breast milk scum off!
  • I plan on using the Medela bottles.

  • Our DD loved the Playtex Ventair bottles when she had to take bottles at daycare.

  • We have a mix of bottles. Babies 'R Us had coupons for a while to get a free Dr. Brown bottle with a certain purchase amount. So, I have a bunch of Dr. Brown's, a few Avent, but primarily Tommee Tippee. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to clean. My son loves them.
  • We used tommee tippee with DS I will try these first this time and move on to other types if she is picky.
  • We used tommee tippee closer to nature. They are so easy to clean.
  • Tommee Tippee all the way! I breastfed and he went between the breast and the bottle just fine. They are also easy to clean.
  • I bought a 3 pack of Munchkin latch bottles, and will register for those.  I have Dr. Browns in mind for backup if those bottles do not work and may buy a 3 pack or so to have if I need to make a switch.  My two nephews used those and one had horrible stomach issues with the Avent bottles.  When he switched to the Dr. Browns, he did fine. I've heard nothing but great things about those. I just figured the Latch bottles are a newer brand and while all things have great and not so great reviews, the general consensus was that they were a decent bottle.  So I'll try them out first, and see how they work.
