Constipation !?!

hello - just wanted to hear some advice or sympathies ;)
36 weeks pregnant and very constipated. I don't think is the fiber or stool softener problem (taking colace and Metamucil) - but it hurts my abdomen and back to push down. Every time I strain - I feel like the baby pushes up against me or my muscles tighten up! Makes going to the bathroom so tough and I'm desperate to avoid hemorrhoids haha. Hope this gets better once baby arrives (although I have a feel it won't!)

I feel your pain! (literally!) 36.5 here and the constipation is real. I eat fiber cookies and lots of veggies but honestly, only 2 things seem to offer even the slightest relief:

    1) I just don't eat any kind of "junk" now. it isn't even worth it. Fruit, Veggies and grilled protein is my life.

    2) A cup of coffee has always done wonders for digestion and it still does. Zero guilt.

ETA 3) You may already know this, but it was not something I learned until adulthood so on the off chance you haven't tried it, I will add it. Every morning, my husband spends 15-20 minutes in the bathroom with whatever book he happens to be reading. It used to irritate me because he is in there FOR.EV.ER. So long sometimes that he is now not allowed to use the main bathroom in the hour before I go to work. However, the truth is, most men do this because most men know that distractions on the toilet (like reading material) actually make it easier to get relief. About a year ago, I started keeping a book in the bathroom- a good read that I can open to any page and find interesting, and it's true, thinking about something else DOES make it easier. sorry for TMI ;)

  • That's very helpful advice thank you. I second the coffee thing! I'm just afraid if I sit on the toilet for too long I'll get more hemorrhoids! Again I feel like it more mechanical. The baby is for sure sitting on my colon and any pressure or strain downwards, results in pressure or baby pushing back up! Lol. Not a pretty thing to talk about - hope we get some relief soon!!
  • hahaha, I have physically lifted my belly for peeing purposes so I totally know what you mean. I also put my feet up on a stool or box because American toilets are not the "ideal" position
