Pram advice needed- is 3 wheels more unstable?

So, I'm torn between prams! My aunt (who is in childcare, and has been for 30 years!) and my sister have both said get a 4 wheel pram, it is more stable.
My pram must haves are the ability to have baby and toddler, suspension, air tyres, adjustable handlebars and bub facing in or out. This is all very hard to find in a 4 wheeler (for under $1000 anyway!)
I have found a pram that ticks these boxes, but has 3 wheels. Im worried if I purchase it I will regret it if it is not as stable!
What are other peoples advice/experiences?
I should note:
I live on a farm thats 60,000 acres and we like to do a lot of adventuring/camping, so it needs to be offroad
The 3 wheeler im looking at is the Phil & teds navigator

Re: Pram advice needed- is 3 wheels more unstable?

  • I have no firsthand experience with strollers (prams). That being said, I've never heard anything about the jogging style (3 wheeled) ones being less stable. I have a few friends that swear by them. I've also heard that the jogging style ones are better for off-road and such.

Also, there are lots of Americans and Canadians on the board that might not know what pram means. You can edit your title to say "pram/stroller" to help them understand.

  • We tried several different strollers in the store and preferred the 3 wheel. Turned easier and did not feel unstable at all.
  • My husband and I went to try out strollers and register tonight. We felt like the length and stability with the 3 wheeled strollers was actually better than 4. They felt much more balanced in terms of weight in front and back. I didn't feel like if I leaned too much on the back that it would flip backwards, and I didn't feel like a child stepping on the front would make it feel like it was going to flip that way either. I did feel more unstable with the 4 wheels. I think it totally depends on your personal taste and which stroller you're looking at
  • DH and I went disc golfing today and let me tell you- the narrow base in front with a 3-wheeler is MUCH better for navigating through uneven/narrow pathways. It would have been hell trying to get our 4-wheel stroller through some of those paths. If you plan to walk anywhere that isn't perfectly level and paved, I would strongly suggest a 3-wheel stroller. I love my 4-wheel because it seems to be less apt to roll away when I'm somewhere like a mall, where the nice big tires of the 3-wheel would roll too easily. But as far as nature walks are concerned, you'll need the air tires and handlebar brake that only come on jogging strollers- all of which I've seen are 3 wheels.
  • I would literally go to a store that sells them, test drive them, and try to knock them over. Most chain store retail employees don't give an F so they won't care what you're doing as long as you aren't making a scene!

I personally bought a 3 wheel, but really liked some 4 wheels too.
  • Aren't triangles the most stable shape?
  • I second PPs, 3 wheelers are much better for any kind of ground that isn't even, and they are easier to navigate. I don't have any prior experience but I knew I wanted a jogging stroller so 3 wheels it was for me. I have never heard of any issues with them being unstable.

Definitely go test them in the store, the one I picked out online was disappointing when I tried it out, so I found one I liked far better instead.
