What is considered a lengthy travel?

edited September 2015 in October 2015 Moms
I am 34 weeks pregnant with my first child. I was told that I shouldn't go on legthy travels. How far do you think lengthy means? Is 300-400 miles safe to travel?

  • You should really call and speak to your doctor I would assume 300-400 miles is too far

  • I'm at 34 and the doctor told me no more than 2 hours away and when I get to 36 weeks no more than 1 hour away.
  • I'm 32 weeks and 7 hours away. But we pass through Chicago and multiple cities/hospitals so I don't really get the harm. If I need to go into labor we will go to closest hospital. So I didn't even ask. Flying would be different I think but we drove. After 34 weeks I would prob stick to a couple hours though. And after 37/38 prob within an hour.
  • This is definitely a doctor-specific question. 300-400 miles today might be different in your doctor's opinion to 300-400 miles three weeks from now.

  • Definitely a doctor specific question for your specific situation. My doctor's biggest concern for travel was water intake, swelling, and blood clots. I traveled 8 hours 1 way when I was 36 weeks with my last. I would not do that again even though my doctor okay'd it. For my doctor, she was most concerned that I was within an hour of a hospital at all times. Now this pregnancy, I am at a greater risk for certain complications, and she has advised against most travel longer than an hour or two. Even my own doctor changes her stance based on each pregnancy.
  • Definitely ask your doctor. It would depend on their opinion of how things have been progressing for you so far, etc. I was ok to travel that far at 34 weeks this past weekend, but only with my drs approval and recommendation for frequent stops due to varicose veins. It's a question they can usually answer over the phone for you.
  • I just traveled 6 hours (one way) to see family and I'm at 35 weeks. My doc okayed as long as I wore my compression socks. I wasn't going to be near a hospital either. I've had really bad swelling but no proteins nor high blood pressure. I guess that's why my doc felt comfortable with me going. But I would really talk it over with your doc.
  • I have an hour commute for work and that is fine with my doctor. If I am going over an hour I am to get out and walk for a few minutes halfway. I also travel home frequently and it is 3-4 hours depending on traffic. My doctor asked me to stop making that trip after 36 weeks.
  • I'm 34 weeks today and flying from Kansas City to New York tomorrow for one last, one-day business trip. My doctor gave me the green light last week (after I told him I had made the same trip the day before), but he said after 34 weeks I couldn't take a trip longer than 1-2 hours.

I'm 36+4 and in the middle of a road trip that will take me 8 hours (driving) away from home. My GP isn't thrilled but she didn't forbid me to go. She left it up to me....
