Endometriosis and Labor

I am a FTM and am currently 28 weeks along. As the day approaches, I've been wondering what labor will be like. I have suffered with endometriosis for over a decade now and have experienced excruciating pain because of it. My menstral cramps would be unbearable. I could not keep food or liquids down, having to be taken to the ER twice because of it. The uterine contractions were always in my back, I wouldn't be able to move and have blacked out once becuse of the pain. I've been told that labor contractions and pain are a lot like severe menstral cramps. My Mom and my Grandma both said labor was less or just as painful as some of the periods they've had. Is there anyone else who has dealt with this? I know I won't know until the time comes, I just want to have a realistic expectation when it does. More than anything I just can't wait to meet my little girl!

Re: Endometriosis and Labor

  • I have stage 4 endo and am 31 weeks with my first, so I am wondering the same!  I have had the extreme pain, blackouts, etc as well and have heard from tons of other ladies with severe endo pain that labor will be cake compared to endo.  That is what I am counting on! :)  Good luck!

  • I had stage 4 endo prior to my first. Personally I felt like labor was nothing in comparison to what I would go through when I was on my period. I remember thinking "really? This is it? I do this every freaking month. And this time I get a baby out of it. Score!" I will say that I opted to get an epidural toward the end. Why? Because I deal with that pain every month, why the &@#% would I want to endure it again when I have some awesome meds to alleviate it?! And let me tell you, epidurals are awwwwwwwesome. After being uncomfortable for 9 months you finally get to feel like you're floating. It is heaven. Seriously- the best part of being pregnant is the epidural. I was still able to feel my contractions enough to push but not enough to be absolutely miserable. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I am counting down the days until I get that epidural :)
  • I have stage 1 endo but the lesions were on very sensitive area and I had a lot of pain since age 13. Also had cysts.

I will say most of labor was comparable to endo pain but I was induced and I will say it was more painful at a certain point and I wasnt able to get an epidural yet and got a shot to take the edge off. The epidural was amazing though.

My endo never came back bad at all after baby number 1, but it's different for everyone.
  • I have pretty mild endo so I can't speak for you with it being more severe...but while my cramping wasn't pleasant when I got my periods, it was NOTHING compared to labor. My sister had it so bad that she opted for a hysterectomy at age 26 after having 2 kids first. She still said labor was worse than anything and she was CONSTANTLY in the ER with pain or problems, needing exploratory surgeries to find the spot the culprit was hiding in this time...
  • I don't have endo, personally, but my mother is an L&D nurse & she always says you can tell which women have endo because they handle the pain like a champ. Apparently labor pains have nothing on endo.
