Constipated Baby?

I think DS is constipated, which I am finding to be rare with EBF babies, if Google can be trusted. He hasn't popped since Friday, and even then it wasn't a good poop like he usually has. He is extremely fussy while trying to nurse, very very gassy and really just wants to be held (happy to oblige but feel bad). I tried sitting him in warm water for a few minutes this morning (found a use for that sitz bath I never used lol) since that used to work for my niece but still no poop after a few hours. His Dr is closed until Tuesday and while I know there is a doc on call, I am not 100% sure he is constipated and don't want to bring him to er or urgent care. I read online that I can put a bit of prune juice in with breast milk since he is over 4 weeks but wanted other suggestions. Who's got 'em?

Re: Constipated Baby?

  • I'm a FTM with a 2 week old and I'm totally winging it but last night I realized LO didn't poop all day so I picked up her legs and gently pushed them into her stomach like a crunch and it might be a coincidence but the flood gates opened up. Might be worth a shot just to call the on call doc and get their opinion.

  • My DD suffered from constripation a lot, prune juice is fine at this age. Not prune juice alone but mixing it with BM. Also Nicu gave DS a small suppository so I'm sure that is an option too. GL

  • 7 days?! Thats crazy! The fact that an EBF baby can be constipated elludes me as it is! He doesn't seem to be constantly in pain, right now he is sleeping quite peacefully. Will see how he does at his next feeding since that's when he seems to be most uncomfortable.
  • My dr had me losen with a thermometer. And it worked. I put lots of vasaline and did circular motion roll. He pooped and kept pooping. Dr said bf babies have a hard time in the beginning
  • I move her legs as if she is riding a bike and it always seems to work

EBF babies can go a very long time without pooping. Its not unusual actually to go up to 10 days (even longer in some cases) and this often suddenly changes somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks. If you LO is between 6 and 8 weeks old this is a very normal fussy period. My guess is that your baby is not constipated at all but is just fussy from a growth spurt, normal fussy period, and normal young infant gas issues. I strongly suggest waiting on the prune juice till you can talk to your doctor. Giving a breastfed baby anything like that is usually not a good idea because it is completely unnecessary and can screw with their tummy and bowel movements more.

Read mid-way down under what's normal for breastfed babies for weeks 2 through 6 under dirty diapers for the constipation issue - I'm sure you can google more on what's normal though.

My pediatrician told me that a breastfeeding baby can go 7 days without a bowel movement. She said as long as the poop is that yellow, seedy poop then you're okay. If it's hard then the baby is constipated. But I'd call the on call doctor just to be safe.

This exactly! I definitely wouldn't go with any sort of juice for a BF baby at this point.

  • My DS (EBF) only went 1-2x a week from 1 month until 6 months when he started solids. And let me tell you I would get scared to leave the house at about 4-5 days because it was always a giant blow out when he did poop.

  • He has been going at least once a day up until now. I am confident its not just fussiness because he won't eat. He sucks, but then spits it all out. Even a fussy baby is going to be hungry and willing to eat.

Spoke to Doc, he agrees he could be constipated since he is usually regular. He is having me mix 1oz distilled water with 2oz breast milk. His belief is that I didn't take in enough liquid over the last day and that in turn he is a little dehydrated. Hope is that more "free water" will clear him up.
  • Late to the party, but seriously...The Windi....@Carleyec93 got me hooked. DD was straining and crying on and of all day, just used one, she filled 3 diapers and is now content. I asked my pedi about them too and he had no issues with them.
  • I don't think you can tell if they're constipated by infrequent bowel movements... it's more by the type of bowel movement. If LO has formed balls of poop that's a problem.. otherwise I wouldn't worry..
