Only insured IVF round - all embryos arrested

I'm devastated.  I don't know what to do.  The clinic called us 1 hour (1 hour!) before our scheduled transfer today to tell us that all 4 of our embryos had arrested.  And our RE is on vacation for 2 weeks starting this week (this is the second time his vacation has delayed our treatment/ decisions).   They provided no information about what happened.  Nada.  And now we're done, out for good, have no more insurance coverage and can't afford to pay for a full cycle on our own without using credit.   We meet with our RE when he gets back from vacation in 2 weeks.   Do clinics ever offer discounts for partial rounds or horrific results?   If yes, should we even stay with this clinic?    our info: me, 34 normal.  DH, 33, MFI.

Re: Only insured IVF round - all embryos arrested

  • Firstly, I'm so sorry for your results. I'm dealing with my own BFN right now and it hurts any time there's not a BFP at the end of the tunnel.

In terms of finances, you never had a transfer. So you shouldn't have to pay for a transfer. So if somehow that was already paid for, you should get money back for a procedure you never had.

I would spend the time thinking about what you want to ask your RE in your WTF appointment. I'm guessing there wasn't any PDG testing done on the embryos so there's no way to know if they were all just chromosomally abnormal? Was it a 3 day or 5 day transfer? With all four arresting, there's always a chance it was lab error, but that chance is really, really, really small.

If you know another IVF isn't in your future, think about questions to ask him for other scenarios. Have you done all the IUIs and medicated cycles that you can? Is donor sperm something you would consider at all? Has he ruled out immunological issues?

Thinking of you and sending creepy internet hugs.

  • I definitely agree that you shouldn't have to pay the full price but not sure if you signed any paperwork that would allow the RE to bill full price to insurance.
No matter what it sounds like you should change to a different RE. The fact that the RE's vacation is getting in the way of your treatment is ridiculous.

I'm so sorry to read that you are going through this. Also sending internet hugs to you.
      • TTC #1 since August 2014
      • currently on 5th medicated IUI cycle
  • So sorry to hear about your embies. I agree with pp and recommend switching clinics (if that's an option). The clinic we went to had several docs on staff, so someone was always there to take care of you.
  • Switching clinics is generally a good thing anyway, even if the first clinic was fine, because it gives you a different doctor with a different approach.

But get all the information you can about what happened.  That could impact how you do things in the future.

Since you are self-pay moving forward, shop around.  Some clinics offer risk-sharing deals where you pay more than you would for one IVF, and they do up to three (with however many FETs you might be able to do, depending on what you get), and you get a partial refund if you don't have a take-home baby at the end.  That can help you manage the costs.  But you have to ask what is and isn't covered, since you probably pay for the meds all on your own.

I'm so sorry that this happened to you.
