Car seat installation

Hey ladies, I drive a 3/4 dodge crew cab. There are only latch points on the drives and passengers side in the back. Of coarse the middle is the most ideal but the seat is shorter there ( which makes me worry about how much of the car seat overhangs) and the seat belt is the over the shoulder kind vs the lap belt you can snug up. We don't have a manual (but will be getting one) I am just curious as to what those of you that have experience have done. Have you placed the car seat behind the drives seat? Even if I could have it in the middle it would make things difficult, I am pretty short so I would have to put the car seat in the truck, climb in after and move it to the centre (minor, but I'm sure a pain in the butt after awhile!). I live in Canada and I know you used to be able to go to the fire station for help with installation but now they don't do that. I'm not sure about the police department but will look into it if I need to. Thanks ladies

Re: Car seat installation

  • You can probably Google to find a manual so you don't have to wait. Most manuals will go over installation and safest points in there.

  • I'm in Canada (Ontario) and our public health unit does car seat checks. Maybe try asking them? They are very knowledgable about best practice for different vehicles!

I didn't even think of public health! Great idea thanks!

  • If you don't have latch anchors in the middle, it's safer to put the seat on one of the sides.

  • As long as your car manual says you can use the middle seat for a car seat, I'd give it a try if I were you. You can always change it if it doesn't work for you or the car. We did a shoulder belt installation in the middle of our car for DS's infant and convertible seat and it was every bit as snug/safe as using latch. We've moved both seats to the passenger sides now b/c of new baby, but still had to do a seatbelt installation for the convertible seat because we. can only use our seat up to a certain weight (combined with weight of child) with latch.

  • I believe the safest seat for baby is the rear passenger seat
  • We just had ours inspected yesterday. They recommended behind the passenger seat and said behind passenger's or driver's seat both give a little extra protection compared to the middle seat.

A proper installation with a seat belt, is just as safe as with latch.

There is a car seat safety thread pinned at the top of the board, and it has some amazing information regarding installing the car seat.

  • I was in the same situation with the anchors only on the sides of the car and none in the center. The research I did left me more confused with half of the sources saying the center was still better and the other half saying anchors were best. The manuals for the car and car seat said either is fine. We opted to put it behind the drivers seat.
  • I recently read this article. It suggests to start by referencing your car/truck manual to understand the safest placement for that particular vehicle and go from there.

  • My friend who works at a car seat check at our Children's Hospital went through my car manual with me. Despite my middle seat having a seat belt, the manual clearly states rear passenger seat (which she said they normally recommend over drivers side because it's less likely to have impact). We're not sure why they don't recommend the middle seat. We can only assume it doesn't have the anchors. We were also told that both seat belt and anchors are equally safe and it's a personal preference.

We've decided to go with seat belt because our parent's cars may not have anchors and we want to make sure we're comfortable with the seat belt way. I would go with what your car manual says.
  • There's a post at top of our month club pinned. Prob will get more responses there.
