anyone recommend good nursing tops?

I've looked at a couple specialty online shops (mamawear and momzelle) as well as regular retail shops (gap and H&M) but I'm wondering if anyone has any they swear by or know of ones that suck. Or are there any good sales going on somewhere on the interwebs? Imma share some promo codes I probably won't use:

Momzelle: MOMMY15

Re: anyone recommend good nursing tops?

  • I really didn't use nursing tops per se, just button down shirts and stretchy tshirts mostly. If I was going to be away from home, I'd wear a nursing tank underneath and use a muslin blanket as a cover up.
  • Loading the player...
  • I just got an adorable nursing tank with shelf style bra built in at target on sale + cartwheel coupon . I am small chested so I didn't invest in much yet as I'm not sure what I'll find most comfortable.
  • Old Navy and Gap have some styles, and you can check out Latched Mama and Milk Nursing Wear. For tanks, check out Undercover Mama.

You don't really NEED nursing tops, per se. Button-down or surplice style shirts over a tank work, though I do like that nursing tops tend to be designed with our post-baby bodies jn mind (yay for tummy coverage)!

  • It's hard to imagine wearing a button up shirt right now with my belly so huge but now that I think of it it's kind of perfect. Good to know! I thought I had to get a bunch of these expensive special nursing tops.
  • Target has some cotton nursing tanks (with a built-in shelf) for $20. I just bought 2, and they seem super soft and stretchy. But I am a FTM, and am also following advice to not buy too many nursing tops as they are no really necessary unless I am nursing in public.
  • I have two nursing tanks by GlamourMom (??). They sell them at our local Natural Baby Company. I figure it will be my basic base layer (I wear tank tops under almost everything). A little spendy but very nice quality.
  • The target registry gift has a coupon in it that works for their nursing tanks. I went to customer service and asked about the registry gift and they just gave it to me (no checking of my registry or anything)!
  • I didn't really think much about nursing tops. Since I'll be breastfeeding in winter at first, I'm thinking I'll wear baggy button up sweaters over a nursing tank when I go out. I bought one at Target. I also invested in a nice nursing bra at Soma Intimates. :)

I just pull my regular shirt up and cover with a blanket if I'm in public. I end up not wearing my nursing tops because they are extra layers to get flat and straight after nursing (which usually means holding a sleeping baby). I did buy nursing tanks to help cover my abdomen while nursing this time around (#5). I already had the kind with a shelf bra, but these are tanks that are just regular, but have a hole cut out over each breast.

Old Navy and Gap are actually having a sale right now. I'm probably going to be doing a lot of tanks with button down tops, like @MamaOwl15 suggested. Old Navy has a lot of comfy tanks if you want something easy and comfortable. I'm planning on wearing them especially at night. Can't recommend the jersey knits enough!

Japanese Weekend! The nursing clothes and PJs are great, but expensive at full price. I have 4 tops and one set of PJs, all of which I've bought 40% off on their website via their coupon codes. sign up for emails, get a code. Take a survey, get a code. Great quality and attractive clothes!

  • I didn't use any nursing tops with my daughter. I used my regular camisoles under my regular shirts. I would pull up my shirt and pull down the top of my camisole. I am by no means small cheated (non BF a D) and this still worked for me. I liked that my tummy was covered. This time around, I might spring for a nursing tank since the camisoles I used to use aren't made anymore. I'll see how things work out.
  • I bought two nursing cami's from kohls online with coupons- motherhood brand (under $15-20 each with coupon). I figure I will wear these around the house during maternity leave with a sweatshirt and yoga pants at least for first few weeks. Prob sleep too. Also good for now while it's really hot and regular tanks don't fit. I bought 2 underwire motherhood nursing bras as well bc my bras now aren't fitting anyway and I have started to leak (under $20 each with coupons). I will wear these ones now and when I go back to work. I bought two non-nursing sport bras from Meijer ($15) that have detachable front straps and figure those will work and be comfy for lounging and sleeping during maternity leave as well. There are many of these out there so then you can still wear afterwards. I also got some maternity underwear from BBB in clearance section and let me just say- amazing! Great for sleeping too bc they don't cut off my circulation! I think I should be set.
  • I agree nursing camis aren't absolutely necessary, as long as you've got a cami that you can easily pull a boob out of. For me the main concern if I'm nursing in public is making sure my stomach is covered. While I try to minimize boob exposure, I'm a lot less worried about a little upper boob being visible than my squishy, stretch marked belly! :-)

  • Just saw some nice bras and tanks on Zulily today - if anyone is shopping.
  • Just bought a tank from Milk and Baby that "turns any shirt into a nursing top" it's a tank but doesn't cover your boobs. So you can easily access a nursing bra, your tummy is covered and you can throw any old shirt on top and just pull it up. I'm well endowed up top and need a nursing bra not just a tank with the shelf bra. This is #2, and I had such an annoying time finding good shirts and/or bras that worked the first time around so I'm hoping this makes the cut!
  • I bought some nursing tanks and bras from a Target. I believe the brand was Gilligan O'Malley. I also bought some soft bras by Hanes that are pliable enough to work as well.

  • @megster1513, are you talking about the Naked Nursing tank? I've been curious how people like those.

Also, along the same lines, I've seen slimming tanks at Target that are open in the boobs as opposed to the typical shelf bra style, maybe something like that would work for nursing? Though I often need coverage at my neckline, too, hence I wear a regular tank.

  • Just curious. Are people using nursing covers or blankets? We have so many large receiving blankets that I'm having a hard time spending the money on a cover.
  • I bought a Glamourmom tank from my local breastfeeding store. It has a nice built in bra. I'm curious to see how I like it. They are pricey so I only got one, figured if they are that great I can always get more.
  • @intheversa, I have one of the free-for-shipping covers you can get from Udder Covers that I used with DS. Honestly I used it more for pumping (since I had to pump in my car on the way to work sometimes) than fit nursing, but it'll be stashed in my diaper bag in case I want to use it again.

Some babies don't like being covered at all, so many moms skip the cover. If you feel like you need to be covered, you can use a light muslin blanket like A&A, or you can usually find a code for udder covers pretty easily . . .

However, if you dress in layers to minimize boob exposure while nursing, you may not even feel you need a cover. Your money would probably be best spent on making sure you've got plenty of nursing-friendly camis.

  • @mamaowl15 yes, that's what I got. I tried it on with my (almost) 37 week belly and it was very comfy and plenty long. I just hated fighting with a nursing tank and a nursing bra and giant boobs!

@Mamaowl15 thanks I'll have to look at that. I know I've got some coupons, I think for Udder Covers but I'll check tomorrow.

Edited: I do have a ton of cami's though, and plan on doing the layering thing so that may work out better.
