Pumping Problems

When I pump it seems like one breast produces way more (approx 3oz) than the other. Is there anything I can do to "even" the flow out?

Re: Pumping Problems

  • You could try to power pump the other side but sometimes one breast is an overachiever and one is an underachiever. 3 oz is pretty lopsided so maybe with more aggressive pumping you could get the other one up but if you're pumping enough to feed LO I don't know that stimulating more of a supply is wise. It's totally up to you though what you want to do.

  • I usually get more out of one than the other so it's not that uncommon. I agree with PP might do the trick and sticking to a consistent schedule.

  • I get double out of the left. Weird. My supply is fine though so I don't know if it really matters?
  • I usually got 1-2 more ounces from my left than from my right. I read somewhere that something like 80% of women get more out of the right breast than the left. I'm really not sure that it matters as long as your supply overall is fine.
  • No matter what I do my left breast is my *special producer*. I get about 4oz. more out of that one. I'm not worried about it though. I just continue to pump for the same amount of time on both breasts. I look at my overall ounces pumped rather than what one breast produces.

  • Its pretty normal. Oddly enough with my first my right was the overproducer and this time my left is. No idea why - maybe baby preference? You can try some of the ideas on this page:

  • My left also produces more than my right. By almost 2-3 ozz

  • My left breast will only pump about 1pz after LO is done feeding but my right can get up to 3oz after a feeding. I think it's normal. I just try to even the BF out so I give LO enough and have enough to pump and store at least once a day.
  • My left produces no more then 1 oz . Right one I can get almost 3 oz on a good day. Not enough to satisfy baby nor create a wonderful stash, but just enough to get through the day
  • I breastfeed and pump. And the only way this evens out is if I let my LO nurse evenly on both sides for a couple days. She can draw more out and stimulate way more than my pump so she actually helps my supply. But it's hard to let her do that because one nipple hurts terribly bad during a latch. Also, some times during the day are better than others. Like mornings are surprisingly not a great time for me to pump...not much comes out at all...

You could try pumping more on the "challenged side" ...more often that is. Not longer.
