Hip/leg pain

Yesterday at work I started experiencing what I thought was some cramping on my right side. I'm a special Ed teacher and I was concerned that one of my students had hurt something while he was escalated with me. I went home early, and as the night went on the pain became more clearly my hip. The pain starts in my hip, goes down the front of my thigh, and down the outside of my calf. I made sure to sleep on my left side all night last night to aliviate some pressure, and it's a little better this morning but definitely still there. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this? I am 19w4d.

Re: Hip/leg pain

  • I get something similar if I'm on my feet too long. Usually resting it up for a day helps. I know that can be super difficult as a special ed teacher needing to be on your feet constantly. Try to take breaks and sit whenever you can and look at doing some hip flexor stretches. Hope that helps!

  • It sounds like it could be sciatica...a common problem in pregnancy. You many to talk with your provider about physical therapy. It usually gets worse as your belly grows!
  • I have hip pain issues but not the same way you describe it. Once I started sleeping with a pillow between my legs most of the pain subsided. It can't hurt to try it, but if it gets worse or continues without relief definitely call your doctor. Sleeping on my side without the pillow is a guarantee to have hip pain the next day.
  • Me too , am 20 weeks now and I started to feel pain in my legs and hips , they said its normal , try to check with your doctor , wish u get better soon
  • Definitely sounds like sciatica. Your sciatic nerve originates in your butt/lower back, runs around your hip and down your leg. Is the pain sharp? I am experiencing dull hip pain, I think from sleeping on my side, it's not nearly as bad as sciatica but I can imagine it's only going to get worse for us!
  • Usually sciatica runs down the back of your leg , the front if your leg may indicate an SI joint problem or issue with the lower back. Since our joints are so loose things are definitely shifting at our pelvis which may be causing the discomfort.
Are you having any numbness or tingling or is it a dull achy / heavy feeling ?
Definitely be sure to use a pillow between your knees at night to alleviate pressure at your low back and hips if you aren't already .
  • Thanks everyone for the responses! I'm still getting a little pain on and off, but it's better now. I've been sleeping with a pillow between my knees and trying to stay off that side. I talked to my dad about it, who is a nurse, and he said it sound like I pinched a nerve in my back. Bleh!
