3 weeks today, rough day

I know 3 weeks can be a growth spurt and a time of fussiness, so I wasnt shocked today when noon came and my little Arya couldnt seem to go down for her nap, but was so tired. It took a lot (45 mins at least of screaming crying) of soothing. I went to the bathroom with the fan on and lights off, sat in sisters room as it was darker with a lullaby channel on, finally stripped her and nursed her skin to skin when she passed out at 230. My question is would you leave her sleeping?? We are just past 3 hours. Normally she would be stirring already and I would wake her to change and feed her. With the fussiness and being over tired and no sign of stirring I cant decide whether to give her this extra sleep or not.

Re: 3 weeks today, rough day

  • My 3 week old has been very fussy since yesterday! I'd let her sleep till around 4 hrs. My mil was at my house yesterday and sooo mad at ME for DS cluster feeding and crying. Not sure how that's my fault. Glad I'm not the only mommy with a growing, fussy LO!

  • Glad I read this post now makes a sense why my LO who is 3wk3d is so fussy atm. I would leave him to sleep if he doesn't stir because when he does my little one doesn't mess about when it comes to feeding. He's gained 3.5lb since he was born lol
  • Well she slept for 4.5 hours and seems to be much better. She usually goes out between 11 and 1, so at 12 today when those red eyes looked at me with no sign of falling asleep I knew things might get a little hairy around here.
  • I always let mine sleep. She's extremely fussy lately so if she wants to sleep, by all means. As long as her diaper is not leaking and she's been feeding, I let her.
  • I have had a really fussy week with my LO too and guess what? She is three weeks! Hahaha ugh it's rough. Between the constant cluster feeding and the fussiness I have been at my wits end a few times this week. I'm just glad I'm not alone.

I also agree with everyone else that I let the baby dictate things at this age. I don't push a schedule especially this young.
  • 3 weeks here and slightly going mental ;). Nursing All. Day. Long. And he's really fighting sleeping like a champ right now... I keep reminding myself just get through 7 weeks and it seems to get so much easier!

  • Yes on the fighting sleep!!!! Between the constant nursing you would think they would sleep great but in between the cluster feeding I'm then struggling to get her to sleep.
  • Yeah I should have clarified that I didn't do a schedule with LOs until they were 8 months old. I let newborns dictate their schedule. I more meant whatever her natural rhythm is, I'm sure she'll get back to once she's had some rest from her crazy day!

I havent done a schedule at all, but her own schedule has been down between 11 and 1 for about 3 hours and has been so nice for me!!! No nap for me today until she went to sleep on me at 230. I slept with her on me for an hour and when I woke up moved her to her swing. At least I got a little shut eye.
  • My LO is 3w1d and has been super fussy the past few days compared to normal. I'm so relieved to find out this is common and she isn't losing her mind.
  • My good friend who is on her 4th baby warned me that 3weeks, 6weeks, 3months and 6months are the fussy growing stages. I have a schedule but I'm also flexible. If it's a bad day, I adjust accordingly. You're doin good, relax and trust those instincts.

Same here with my 3 week 5 day little one. Constant feeding, doesn't want to nap, etc.

What's annoying me the most is EVERYONE around me saying, "you really need your sleep. You cannot function well without sleep." My MIL is going around telling everyone this as well.

I actually think all us new moms need some slack. Sure, we'd all love more sleep, but at the moment it's lucky if we get anything close to an hour before mom has to step back up.

I think we're going pretty well, all things considered (although I've noticed I do have a short fuse now with everyone & their "advice". Just leave us be.)

On the plus side, these stages are usually followed by a more settled period. Yay! We are just coming up to 3 weeks now, I'm bracing myself....

I just found out this 3636 rule the other day after posting this...im going to try to mentally prepare myself when 6 weeks comes near. Time is flying by already so itll be here before I know it. :( Ill just have to let her sleep on my chest again to soothe her..oh darn more snuggles!!!
  • @ErikaB123 I heard about the 3636 fussiness too and so far it's held true for us! 3 weeks in LO had a few hard days. She is now 7 weeks, but her 6th week was tough too!

Hang in there @SashaDenn25 ! Hopefully it'll pass, but in the meantime, baby snuggles ftw!
  • We hit 4 weeks yesterday and things are finally calming down. Wowza that was a week! Can't wait for 6. ;)
  • Why does 3 weeks make them fussy? I'm having a very hard time with my 3 week and 5 day old!
